You shall have no other gods beside me
"You shall have no other gods beside me" is the first of the Ten Commandments. Well, at Parfumo, I would rather say that one should have no other idols beside the Extrait de Parfums. However, it is the case for me that I indulge in a few other collecting passions, such as coffee mugs, lingerie, writing instruments, and watches. And since you can't always see every watch in person at retail stores, it's good that you can find many watches presented and discussed online, including on YouTube. It's nice when entertainment doesn't fall short alongside pure information. And so it happened that in the context of the watches by Christof Maybach, I learned that he has also extended his passion for luxury to perfumes. Time to order a sample from one of the innovators of 2023 for the narrow foot.
The golden box with the striking letters promises pure luxury, which is also reflected in the heavy square glass bottle that shimmers as golden as the golden collar and the golden cap. It is astonishing how quickly the plagiarists come onto the scene, so that you can already buy this bottle along with its little knob for next to nothing on various cheap platforms in the Far East. But good taste, as we know, cannot be mistaken.
The scent itself quickly feels very familiar. An orange fruitiness, closely intertwined with Eastern spices and earthy-mineral notes. However, there is also another accord that increasingly feels out of place to me. Piercingly sharp alcohol with vehement herbs reminiscent of a long-forgotten cough syrup from my childhood. These soft-fruity mineral notes and the bitter-green herbs simply do not seem to fit together; they clash. The woods rushing to the rescue cannot help either. Moreover, the alcohol note is too strong to be benevolently described as "boozy." It is thus also clearly too strict to pass as purely masculine.
The scent starts off quite pronounced and accentuated on me. It only gets loud when the alcoholic note kicks in. At the same time, the otherwise beautiful mineral accord completely fades away, utterly suppressed. Just an hour ago, I had to work my nose deep into my skin to perceive anything of it. And before the second hour has passed, all the herbs and woods evaporate along with the dregs. Gone, extinguished! Interestingly, the scent is also no longer perceivable on me by other people. Unfortunately, that is somewhat weak. In fact, it is quite weak. The scent did not want to cling to my clothing any longer either.
In my eyes and nose, the promised luxury is unfortunately far too meager, although I do not want to deny the scent a certain potential. Let's hope that Mr. Maybach's luxury watches last longer.
