i don't get the hype

sure, it does smell like a damp forest floor, a bit of mycelium, a bit of moss... but only for about 15 minutes. then it's just a basic, masculine-leaning green-woody scent that is untraceable after 2 hours.

being $140 for a 30ml bottle, i expected to smell like i've been crawling around forests, digging truffles with my bare hands and kissing every single frog i've encountered until i get to shower...

for that purpose i suggest just blindbuying chypre mousse from oriza legrand or coven by andrea maack

Finding a fairy ring in the woods near the playground

Dewy, smooth, and earthy, surprisingly floral. Damp like a bed of moss, not like a basement. Freshly-dug soil without stink or rot, just good clean dirt. There's some grassy green notes that give it a bit of sparkle in the top and middle, and a couple of gentle violet notes that mellow some of the mild earthy funk that lingers in the base. To second Katzevogel, it really does feel like playing "Enchanted Fairy Forest" when you're a kid after it's been raining, complete with the fairy ring of mushrooms that may or may not get stomped on. Pretty, surprisingly wearable, approachably weird. Wears close to the skin.

cloud forest

A non-animalic forest, like a perfect little terrarium of candyfloss moss and fresh mulch. The most straightforward of the Clue quartet for me. Based on the mushroom note, I came searching for a chewy, green umami note, but couldn’t find anything savoury. (Well, not unless I were a bug). However, it’s a truly lovely forest floor scent. Earthen and misty, but not gloomy. There’s dappled sunshine in these woods and, when I inhale deeply, the vegetal notes ring stemmy and alive. Recently returned from a hiking trip through some temperate cloud forests and Morel Map invokes that world perfectly. Hold on tight, spider monkey.

Mental Snapshot: You’re a wood elf ranger. Or a gnome druid. You bathe in babbling brooks and dry yourself on curtains of hanging moss. You shapeshift into a potbellied badger and root about the ferns for the choicest truffles. You don’t smell like wet badger, though. (You’re magic, duh).

Wearing this will make you a fun guy!

I will begin by saying I absolutely love this fragrance and love Clue. I've reviewed their other fragrances, and think they're very special. These fragrances are so original and realistic, which I absolutely love. They evoke memories I'd long forgotten, and Morel Map is a beautiful ode to foraging in the Midwest. The opening of this fragrance has it all: mushroom, soil, oakmoss. After about an hour on my skin, it dries down to smell a bit more bitter and more like a generic men's cologne. I've found this is a common thread amongst a lot of fragrances like this for me though, so I don't think it's specific to Morel Map. Nevertheless, I think it's worth noting in case you're like me and find that other soily mushroomy fragrances lean toward that kind of profile after a while on your skin.

I agree with the other reviews

I think I actually hate this perfume. I had it for a year and still haven't finished the bottle, and normally perfumes mark 1-3 month time periods in my life because I go through them so fast.

When I make reference to niche brands that don't deserve the weird notes they claim, I'm talking about Clue. I don't think this smells like mushrooms. I think it smells cheap and people are fooled by the amazing packaging design.

But when I bought it on an intensely rainy day summer 2024, it smelled amazing to me. And when I wore it once on another rainy day last week, it kind of smelled okay.
