Handcrafted Masterpiece
Often there are little gems that go unnoticed because of the low cost that makes them look sloppy, or because of lack of notoriety, but also because people don’t care. And this is the case of Drop by Flora, the only perfume of this Italian cosmetic house located in Tuscany near Pisa, which produces the raw material independently and bio, and creates products perfect for aromatherapy. Drop is a 50ml Eau de Toilette with a retail price of € 42, but you can also find it online for half the price. The bottle recalls a drop; it's minimal, with a light fluid inside. Why is this perfume so special? The manufacturer claims to use 100% pure essential oils, including jasmine, tuberose, and ylang-ylang. Still, it added to these declared notes some aromatic herbs, damp musks, and precious woods, which those with a developed sense of smell will not struggle to recognise. I found this fragrance in the German discount DM that is slowly expanding in Italy, for € 19.90. Even though the tester was empty, I could smell the scent through the dispenser and knew I would like it. So, I nearly blindly bought it. Are you curious to know all the colours of this precious gem? Follow me, and we will find out together.
Drop has an enveloping and warm woody and musky base, combined with sweet and floral accords. One might think about something outmoded, austere, obsolete, old-fashioned. Instead, Flora designed it with contemporary in mind. At the first sniff, you get the immense power of the whole composition, explosive, like when you spray Aromatics Elixir Perfume. It begins with a spike of aldehyde accord, immediately followed by a hint of aromatic lavender, and some light citrus fruits, I guess creamy bergamot, sour lemon, and sweet orange. But the tart edge is not dominant, and a balmy spice kicks in, similar to juniper berries, with a touch of camphor-like tinge. I even get a green and herbal accord with nuances akin to camomile. Herbaceous notes, the mix of citrus and camphor touch, mixed perhaps with the tuberose, complement the lavender beautifully. The initial phase is airy, aromatic, citrus but not too sour, supported by a massive dose of modern patchouli in the background.
After a few minutes, a floral accord announces the heart with a soapy slant, like a fresh white towel and soap. Indolic white jasmine is the first blossom that oozes from the bouquet, clear, powerful, and unmistakable, like a nightly summer breeze. Then follows not too dense and opulent tuberose, pleasant, a tinge sensual, smooth, and creamy, but not headache-inducing. Afterwards, the mellifluous yellow ylang-ylang completes the bunch of flowers with its smooth creaminess and sweetness. The well-known trio creates a classic, yet glorious aroma, fresh floral and warm at the same time, and they work like magic on my skin. The blossoms are dense, deep, and prevailing. Along with the floral aspect, I even catch a more green accord, which I associate with galbanum. As such, the middle phase is rich in green and floral nuances.
The scent remains in this realm for some time before retreating to a quiet, cleansed patchouli topped with light cottony musk. There is a tinge of something camphor blending beautifully with the patchouli without turning into a mothball smell. The base is enveloping and warm, which combines with sweet and floral notes, for an intriguing and seductive effect. It is one of those fantastic scents that leave you enveloped in a beautiful amber, soapy, and powdery aura-like baby talc with no reminiscence of makeup or lipstick.
The scent neither dominates nor disappears. Instead, it remains a force field of peace and serenity that surrounds you throughout the day. It is floral and feminine but with a masculine bite. Not so strong that a single spray fills the entire room and, not offensive, its understated character suggests warm transitional seasons, spring and fall mornings and even summer evenings. Ideal for leisure, for the office, for a quiet weekend, when you are in a relaxed mood, a meditative scent.
I base the review on a 50ml bottle I have owned since September 2022.
