A woody intersection
MAD Parfumeur - Oud 03 Wonderwood
Anyone expecting Oud 03 Wonderwood to be a detailed duplicate of Wonderwood will be surprised: Even though its inspiration is obvious, this perfume goes its own way.
The bottle is heavy in the hand. The black rectangular bottle, through which you can see nothing of the liquid inside, impresses with its simplicity. A gold-colored leaf in the middle of the bottle bears the name of the perfume. However, it must be said at this point that the bottle shows signs of wear very quickly, which I find less attractive.
A round, heavy lid and an atomizer that, in my opinion, distributes an ideal amount of liquid on the skin.
But without further ado, let's get straight to the fragrance. Instead of the citrusy freshness of the original, this fragrance has a clearly dominant woody base with a striking, almost edgy leather note. The citrus nuances that make CdG's Wonderwood so lively are completely absent here - what remains is a much more linear, "darker" composition.
No interplay of wood and citrus, no sophisticated balance through contrasts.
This one is straightforward, monotonous, tart. What I found so seductive about its namesake I don't find in this one. But what I do find doesn't leave me disappointed for long. Because what the Wonderwood plays on in terms of sophistication, it forfeits in its weak durability on my skin. And the Oud 03 Wonderwood clearly scores with its strength - its sillage and longevity. Almost humorlessly, it clings to my skin and selflessly wraps itself around me like a sheath of leathery wood.
Oud 03 Wonderwood barely develops on my skin - but that is not meant in a negative way. It remains a constant presence, with very good longevity and noticeable sillage. It is not a fragrance that needs to be overdosed - a few sprays are enough.
It also reminds me more of Genetic Bliss than its namesake.
Anyone who loves fragrances such as Genetic Bliss or Visit for Men Eau de Toilette should find what they are looking for here. In contrast to Visit, it is not a hint sweet and remains dry and woody on my wrist until later in the evening.
I also find it ideal for layering. It goes well with light citrusy fragrances or classically with the Iso des Molecule. But it can also be worn solo.
Bottom line: not a clone, because it is more minimalist, drier and edgier. It's definitely worth seeing!
