Dark are the paths beyond the hills...
They were just there, all the strange beings.
Luminescent and sharp, the green Nootka cypresses now trembled, then a dense, bright, spicy smoke rose, making the air strangely dull like the mist of dark moss.
Frost sparks burst and let earthy droplets rain down, the whole thing began to pave a rotten, woody path that led to the distant mountains, where deer lived in cold caves, be careful because you must not step off the paved paths.
Gnarled, furrowed juniper bushes lined the dark, smoky, rugged route, all the way to the caves beyond the hills.
In there, it smelled of damp, felt-like fur and warm animal skin, rotting trunks jutted out from the darkness of the ground, all resinous, the rock walls shimmered grayish and glistened waxy.
One could only slowly walk on the paths there, through damp mire, warm bubbling earth, it is important not to stand still, or else you will sink into the bog of baked clay.
Suddenly, coldness set in and ethereal mist crawled up the rough mountains. Gray-blue clouds pushed the sky together and minty flashes flickered through them.
It became quiet beyond the hills,
quickly a network of fibrous roots grew, and the remnants of the sun cast shadows on the humus-decaying earth.

Beyond the Hills III starts with a bright, cool, and spicy-peppery smoke [incense blend, Nootka cypress].
Then it transitions into a darker, spicier, smoky atmosphere, characterized by old, rotting woods, sharp resins, herbaceous plants, and mosses. Interwoven with a warm, waxy animalic note [juniper, Nepalese musk deer, beaver castoreum, cedarwood].
As it progresses, it becomes more boggy with various oud notes, hinting at damp, decayed wood, dark earth, and mineral clay soil. Additionally, it remains smoky and gains an ethereal cool note with minty-menthol undertones.
The associated landscape becomes boggier and lonelier, until it fades towards the end with a rooty, mulch-like quality and becomes somewhat warmer again.
One lingers at least a whole day in the lonely but fabulous landscape beyond the hills.
