vanilla wearing a disguise?
I am notoriously a vanilla hater. It's usually too sweet, cloying, and one-dimensional for me. I tend to prefer woody, spicy, aromatic, and soft fragrances. I tried this one very skeptically and found a pleasant surprise. This is a vanilla that will almost make me admit, I DO like vanilla.

The problem with most vanillas is they go cloying or end up smelling like playdough. But This one flirts with salt and aromatics and mate in a way that is completely transformative. It has become addictive to me, in a way that makes me understand why vanilla is such a staple and comfort for so many. If this is what vanilla feels like to others, then I will formally apologize.

When I wear this, my mom is baking and my grandma is cooking. Something rich and full of spices. Something salty and comforting. I am by the flowers and house plants. The window is open. The air smells sweet and savory. The air is thick, but not in a choking way. In a way that makes you feel held.

A fresh non-gourmand vanilla
From the moment I sprayed the small sample I got, I fell in love. This was the vanilla I had been wanting. For the record, I don't enjoy sweet gourmand fragrances, although I love vanilla in and of itself. This one is light, fresh, just a touch sweet--perfect for every day and has become quite the easy reach in my perfume repertoire. It lasts 6-8 hours on my skin, and even longer on my clothing.

The Vanille
I want to like this more than I actually do. In theory, I’d love this. I have a tin if Harney & Sons Vanilla Tea that I adore, but this isn’t it. And for me, it’s mainly the salt note that’s disagreeable.

I love salted cream, salt on my cookies, and the idea of salty skin from the ocean. But salt, in real life, has no smell. Let’s be honest here. So as a fantasy note, I have difficulty translating that into an olfactive idea that’s natural. I smelled something similar in Teo Cabanel’s Peau Salee—the salt just comes across as too mineralic and unpleasant for my nose. If I didn’t read the notes, I wouldn’t know what it was, except that I didn’t like it.

In defense of the fragrance, this salt note is most noticeable when you sniff the area of skin that you sprayed. The fragrance that wafts around you isn’t unpleasant and is in fact, a likeable gentle vanilla. It reminds me of salted sea cream you might get on top of coffee/ tea drinks. It also goes away completely into the drydown.

But honestly, I don’t like having to wait to enjoy a fragrance. I’d rather pick up a vanilla that I liked whole-heartedly.

NETTE has one of the most beautiful bottles among the newer brands. I've always thought it had an objet d'art quality about it with the thick glass, wide silhouette, and 80s sort of feel. I have yet to try their candles, but speaking to their fine fragrances, with the exception of La Foret at time of writing, they're all a bit sweeter and more feminine than I'd like. They remind me of Jo Malone, but a degree or two more substantive in weight. I hope in time, they'll explore different fragrance tastes.

Calming Cold Vanilla
This is a really pretty, refreshing vanilla that has an airy and cold quality to it. It opens up almost savory with the top notes and dries to a nice woody, creamy vanilla that isn’t gourmand or sweet at all. I can be quite sensitive to green fragrances, and this isn’t green to my nose, but rather something kind of herbal that is enveloped in a mellow cold vanilla. It doesn’t read as intense or invasive to me, and makes for a nice work/function friendly scent. In my opinion, the projection is moderate and the longevity is a couple of hours before it becomes a subtle skin scent. If you’re someone that wants to consistently notice their fragrance well into the day (or well after spraying it), you might need to carry around a travel size of this one.

Overall, I mainly see it as a daytime winter/spring fragrance, but it could also easily become a signature. Once I finish my travel spray, I’m investing in a full bottle. It’s unlike anything else in my collection.
