Girl of the Year Thin Wild Mercury 2023

Girl of the Year and I got off to a rocky start. At first, she was definitely wearing me, not the other way around. Now I can walk into a dimly lit room and proudly declare: I smell weird and I like it! And in 2026, if I’m being real, sometimes I want my energy to be a little challenging. In a slightly grimy, hot girl kind of way.

I won’t dance around the divisiveness of this fragrance - this is not a blind-buy safe crowd-pleaser. The fur here is very funky. Think: never-laundered vintage fur you’ve danced in all night. The smoke tiptoes right up to barbecue. The lipstick might be expired. The incense smells like Papier D'Arménie papers. The drydown is a cumin-y orris and somehow… it works. It's sexier than the sum of its parts. Mid-century muses Edie Sedgwick and Baby Jane Holzer are obvious inspiration, but perfumer Cathleen Cardinali also named Charlotte Gainsbourg smoking a cigarette, and I totally get that here.

This is something I wear when I don't necessarily want to impress, but do want to make an impression. Most appropriate for a fall or winter evening, but if you are wearing this at all, you probably don't care about propriety.

Lipstick and incense smoke cling to a worn leather jacket, grounded by sandalwood and orris root. It’s the lingering scent of a socialite on a jacket left behind at a party. Someone who is “here for a good time, not a long time” for better or worse.

It reminds me of the indie sleaze era of glitter and greasy eyeliner, smudged lipstick and chipped nail polish, cigarettes on the rooftop against a thumping soundtrack of The Knife and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This perfume feels like a remnant of times long past, only recalled through hazy memories and blurry film photos. Prior incarnations of oneself dredged from the back of a closet.

tldr; smoky and powdery, one of those flickering neon lights with a woman's leg and stiletto-clad foot waving, kink night at the dyke bar, a butchfemme fragrance if I have ever smelled one

If this fragrance was a woman, she would own a small, dimly lit shop. The walls would be lined with old vinyl records and thrifted art. It would be an eclectic shop, filled with vintage clothes, books, VHS tapes, the occasional oddity; anything she found interesting, really. It would be rare to see her without a cigarette between her lips, which would always be painted a deep crimson.

This is beautiful. There’s just something about an incense note that gets me every time; It’s smoky, woody, musky, a bit sweet, and there’s also a tobacco note that isn’t listed. This smells like a dressing room, lined with fur. A leather jacket lays on the chair, with a pack of cigarettes in the pocket. Exquisite
