painfully precious
Fresh lilacs on a bed of powdery orris and an air of citrus. The cosmic essence of Saint Francis of Assisi, so austere and merciful that it would soften the most wretched heart.

It’s the comedown after an intense crying session. It’s the joke someone tells to make you laugh while you’re in the midst of heaving sobs. Your years dripping onto a fresh lilac bush, transforming grief into beauty. The alchemy of rebirth.

It’s a tear from a baby lamb. It’s all things pure, innocent, melancholy, and heartbreaking.

model home lotion
The white swan to Glass Bloom’s hummingbird. It’s a clean scent. A lofty, literal French maid, model home kind of clean. Haters will say it smells like baby wipes. Lovers will say it smells like the shape of lost love. I think it smells like a very expensive eczema lotion someone like Gwyneth Paltrow might use, SPF15, aliquoted in an alabaster vessel shaped like a dove. Soothing, aloof, and slightly sterile. I feel disingenuous wearing Tears in my single room flat.

Despite all that, I keep coming back to waft. I can’t help but feel calmed and cleansed when I wear it. Lilac bouquets, goose-down duvets, naptime in dappled sunshine. Tears is a very put-together scent. It’s an older sister, honour student, first chair violinist scent. Maybe that’s why I have such a hot-cold relationship with it. I’m afraid I quite like it.

Mental Snapshot: You’ve never gotten dirt under your fingernails. And if you did, you wouldn’t be the one cleaning it out. You have a boy for that. The same one that droppers rosewater into your scalp every morning. Goodness, you didn’t know there was such a thing as “new car scent.” Even your oldest cars have smelled the same as the new ones! (Your oldest car was eight months old).

tl;dr: model home lotion

Picnic at hanging rock
As a Victorian studies graduate, I’m always looking for fragrances to invoke the feeling of melancholy longing, repression, and mysticism. Tears perfectly meets that criteria.

It smells like the repression of desire, starched petticoats under dry heat, hot sweat rolling down a balmy forehead, the vague smell of church incense, resinous and sad. It smells like being lost in the wilderness, swallowed by the oppressive heat and looming landscape of the Australian outback. It is honestly Picnic at Hanging Rock embodied.

alone in kyoto
This is what the film 'Lost in Translation' would smell like if there was a perfume inspired by it. Especially the 'Alone in Kyoto' scene.

A very quiet appreciation of beauty. Melancholic, soft, nostalgic, it's like wanting to cry but you can't. Pondering, reflecting, wondering through an unknown place both physically and emotionally. It's not quite sadness, but a space between. Almost hopeful, not entirely lost.

East coast beaches in winter/spring. Or the first ray of sunshine filtering through a secret garden after a heavy rain. The feeling of being quietly sad but still enjoying the beauty around you.

To be able to capture and inspire such intricate feelings is a masterpiece. What an incredibly beautiful fragrance.

salty fairy tears
quite green and almost fougere in the opening, wet and earthy petrichor. after the dry down and throughout wear, I get mostly orange blossom and lilac. this is accompanied by a salty tinge of ambergris, which gives this a very fleshy, intimate impression; a little sweaty almost. like bottled fairy tears. I could see myself wearing this in any season but spring is where it would most shine. I find myself sniffing my wrist a lot while wearing this. lasted about 6 1/2 hours on my skin, decent projection if you care about that, I tend not to. a green second skin scent, if your skin were made of freshly picked flowers.

Lilacs and pink pepper give way to stagnant water. Like old water in a plastic cup by a lilac bush. Don't get me wrong, I like it....

Soft lilac. Soapy impression. Honey/pollen. Delicate & powdery. Shy sour green wood. Very clean. Kinda hazy. Pleasant. Favorite lilac so far

the watery lees at the bottom of a vase of lilacs. after awhile the petals get papery and fragile and blow out the hospital window like ghost orbs

A powdery lilac. What I imagine angels would smell like.

A pleasant purple lilac smell. Neroli in the opening was unnecessary though. Might be too one-note to be a full bottle purchase for me...
