The ultimate luxury...
Why? Because it is such an expensive, beautiful smell but gone in minutes! Usually, an Eau de Cologne by nature only really consists of top notes. So in this case, it resembles many of the other famous EdC's of the past (including 4711). Still it's a beautiful one, and very naturally made, with real citrus oils.
The story goes that Jacques Guerlain wanted to recreate the smell of his time spent in the luxurious French Riviera. This Eau de Cologne is not meant to be worn as a perfume, but merely splashed or sprayed on throughout the day (at any occasion), when feeling ill, when stepping out of the bath or shower, when walking out the door, before meeting people, at home, at work... wherever! The ultimate luxury... and the smell? A perfect citrus floral combination! Citron (a bitter, rough relative of the lemon, slightly more sour and fruity - and which in reality smells somewhere between a lime and a grapefruit), paired up with a good dose of orange blossom to hold it up. Then, in less than an hour, gone! But then the fun starts again when you re-apply. Very decadent! This is what rich people use just for fun!

I would recommend wearing this the most during the summer months, or better still, if you live somewhere hot. Otherwise it's just pure luxury, but still quite beautiful. Like pure, freshly-squeezed lemonade and ice in an elegant, decadent glass bottle!

To the Hundredth Year
I now count a hundred years
And grow older each day;
The fragrance king Jacques Guerlain
Raised me in the container.

Since then, many things have happened
But I know nothing of it,
For now, a merchant named Vuitton
Lets me go for money.

I’ll wash you with a flood of lemons,
Plentiful and rich,
And already minds feel quite good
In the scorching hot sun.

It is a quick pleasure,
As brief as it may be,
There are aromas from the south
To delight the nose.

And because I won’t be here for long,
I’ll become shy over time,
A surge from my pot to you
Ignites life anew.

I know not the breath of death
Nor the pains of dying,
I will forever persist
In the blush of all days.

+++

With thanks to Morgenstern, whose turtle provided me the foundation.

Under the Italian Sun
„…what is this beautiful thing?“

(It’s late summer, sometime in the late 80s. I’m pressing my nose against the window of an elegant perfumery in Sirmione, located on the southern shores of Lake Garda.)

„…what could this possibly be? I don’t recognize this slim, tall packaging shape (back then still in golden decor with a black collar), nor can I properly read the name.
It seems to be a long name. What could it be?“

As a young person, I was driven by great curiosity in every respect.
Without hesitation, I entered the small perfumery, pointing - not being fluent in Italian - at the top shelf. The friendly saleswoman quickly fetched a ladder, climbed to the highest step, and retrieved the object of my desire from the shelf.

„Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat“. What a name! What a bottle! I was already “guerlainized” back then (this term doesn’t come from me. Olaf, do you allow me to use it here?) But of course, I only knew products that were offered in Germany.
This slim, elongated ribbed bottle with a press-on cap was completely foreign to me at the time.
Later, I learned that this bottle shape was offered in the 70s and 80s for the Eaux de Cologne
of the popular perfumes in 75 ml and 45 ml sizes. The enthusiasm of that time reached another peak: the bottles were screwable and thus refillable without a special cartridge.

First experienced in the sunny southern climate, I felt truly happy with my new acquisition. This scent fit the south, fit the terrace by Lake Garda, fit Verona, fit Venice. The fact that the fragrance doesn’t have a very long lasting power bothered me little at the time. I had the bottle with me everywhere and replenished it at every suitable opportunity…
From Germany, I knew the “Eau de Cologne Imperial” and the “Eau de Guerlain,” which I didn’t particularly appreciate. With “Fleurs de Cedrat,” it was different. Here, I liked the fresh, very lemony, and invigorating note, which in my perception also contains something spicy.

Back in Germany, I was “proud as a peacock.” Even my beloved regular saleswoman at KaDeWe didn’t know “Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat.”

In Germany, “Eau de Fleurs de Cedrat” made its debut in 1992 with the standardization of Guerlain’s Eaux. The label was kept in golden yellow. Since last year, the label features the French sun emblem as well as the name of Jacques Guerlain and the year of appearance 1920.

Duftstick wrote in his contribution with a smile that it might even be suitable for the refrigerator.
Seriously: a bottle really stands there for me in the hot season. Try it out, summer is coming.

The Stubborn Butterfly
This fragrance is a phantom beauty. For the half-blink of an eye that one gets to perceive it in all its glory, an incredibly appetizing, full-bodied citrus mélange can be caught, to which I would gladly bestow the compliment of Nimm 2-juicy, entirely without mockery! Characterful, expertly composed with impeccable taste, and a true little fulfillment for a freshness lover. The high-quality verbena is, in my view, the main reason why it is so beautiful. It simply provides everything: the lemony, the green, and the delicious. Perfectly complemented by the lemon and its friends. Even the cedar that comes through does its work with rare ease. I have never encountered such an airy wood note. Everything is wonderful, really! Only, it’s all a matter of ten minutes.
I can apply any amount over any area of my body, and yet the fragrance vanishes in no time like a stubborn butterfly, leaving only a fine shimmering trace behind, the echo of a wingbeat. The fleetingness is unmatched among all the dozens of citrus perfumes I’ve had in front of my nose in the past few weeks. Why is there such a lack of strength here? And why does it still cost so much? And why is it still so beautiful?

Too Beautiful to Be Here
Often, when it comes to fragrances that are a bit weaker, people quickly write about catastrophic longevity and sillage. To all of them, I would like to present this beautiful quickie from Guerlain, aimed right at the citrus heart. I would call this meager longevity and no projection at all. It's as if you’re squeezing a lemon onto your skin, perhaps even shorter. We're talking about 15-30 minutes. That’s just incredible, even for an EdC, hauntingly short. My predecessor is absolutely right about the phantom scent. And yet, it is simply beautiful, zesty, citrusy, refreshing, almost even more beautiful than its brothers Eau de Guerlain and Imperial, which tempted me into a bargain & blind buy. So, it’s not a bad purchase due to its simple beauty, but I won’t give it a really good rating. Sometimes, brevity doesn’t equate to quality. You can’t even reapply quickly enough, as it vanishes...

Actually, I would normally provide the fragrance description here, but since the scent is really so transparent, simple & short-lived, and my previous commentators have already hit the nail on the head, I’ll skip that & refer to the conclusion.

Bottle: the beautiful bee bottle as always.
Sillage & Longevity: as already mentioned - at zero!

Conclusion: a ghost of the Mediterranean, lemon, Nimm2, light woods, and Guerlain quality - but also not there, like a ghost!

Where some associate lemon with cleaning & others connect lemon verbena with yellow Nimm2, I’m having a group cuddle in the lemon field.*

Squeeze the lemon until your face scrunches up.
Bite into the zest.
Then let it rain down from the ceiling.
And sadly, it's gone.

It's so wonderfully refreshing, almost pure lemon/lemon zest/bergamot. But a cologne, not very long-lasting. I don't care, I love it.

The most beautiful citrus scent ever. Doesn't last! You have to spray it constantly. I can already see myself walking around with a bottle in my pocket. Continuous spraying.

One of the most beautiful top notes I've ever experienced. But that's all the fragrance has to offer, and after 20 minutes, it's completely gone. What a shame ..

Very bright, sharp lemon zest. Guerlain or not... Goutal's Eau d'Hadrien does it much better.
