Forever Young
Shyly, she looks at me with her brown eyes. I would love to stroke her chubby, soft cheeks. But I know I can't.
Her black hair is hidden under a large, white pom-pom hat. Still shy, she tries to button her pink winter jacket with her little hands. Her legs barely reach the floor of the bus seat, and when she looks at me again, I smile.
But of all days, today I had no time to put on makeup, and the world sees my true face. Crazy, considering that even without makeup, I still look like a child at my age.
As I stand next to her, I catch a whiff of a kind of zesty, powdery cotton and pomegranate scent. Soft yet slightly sweet. Clean, as clean as the metaphor of a well-behaved child. Because this childlike purity, we eventually lose it, we, all of us adults.
When the bus stops, the guy with the dreadlocks is there, and as we all have to get out, I let the little girl know with my gaze and a smile that she can go out first.
And somehow, I am startled. Because the guy with the dreadlocks is looking at me. Like someone who hasn't seen my makeup or my mask, but me.
EPILOGUE
“The eyes are useless, when the mind is blind.”
