American Hustle on Fragrance
I went to see American Hustle over the weekend, and one of the characters, Rosalyn, asked the others to smell her fingernails because she loved the smell of a certain topcoat. They all liked the fragrance, and she said that it smelled of "flowers and garbage." She then remarked that "The best perfumes have something rotten in them." I definitely agree with that civet and ambergris smell unpleasant, so it's likely true if such ingredients are used with restraint.

Thanks guys, I agree that there are a lot of notes that smell unpleasant. Fragrance is about balance, and it's so personal.

How true. Tuberose has a "rotting" smell to me. I admire it, but just really can't wear it. I'll put it on for a while, then take it off when it's straight-up tuberose. Yet I adore civet and ambergris. Everyone's different. It's what sells perfumes, right? One person's treasure is another's person's garbage, as they say...

Cool! Haven't seen this yet, but I hope to. Nice to hear of a movie with some character development! Yeah, it seems like there are a lot of "something rotten" notes in perfume. The ones I find the most troublesome are the indoles that are present in many white florals, esp jasmine.
