Dans Tes Bras; A Study in Intimacy
"The scent of an embrace.

A moment of closeness full of promise and the addictive feeling of mutual dependency. Cashmeran, which performs like a vibrating musk, is crowned with violet, warmed by heliotrope and imbued with the saltiness of moist skin. Sandalwood adds a milky softness, and white musk, a clean magnetism, evoking the scent of someone you couldn’t live without."

I have said many times, that despite my own proclivity for hyperbole, I wish that there was less of it employed in marketing, because hollow words and empty promises lead to disappointment, and the beast that is "hype" is one that is never sated. However, as I did with Musc Ravageur, I must take a knee, as the description given by Malle is perhaps one of the finest examples of verbosity usually employed in a metaphorical sense enjoying a rare moment of non-metaphorical applicability.

It is because of this, that I believe Dans Tes Bras is criminally overlooked. And after spending some time unraveling the secrets it holds, I can understand why many wouldn't gravitate towards it, I am still incensed that it doesn't receive the laurels it deserves. Especially, when it far outshines many others within the Editions De Parfums line.

Before I move on, there is something I would like to make abundantly clear. This fragrance is not for the masses. It is not for the inexperienced nose. It is not for those who enjoy blue fragrances and naught else. And it is most certainly not for those on the prowl for compliment beasts. I am afraid if that is what you're seeking, then you will have to look elsewhere. This is for those that appreciate the art of perfumery, for those willing to step far out of their comfort zones, for those that are patient and know the rewards of such. This is not a scent for everyone. And I don't say this to be snobbish or rude, I say this simply because it's true. One will not find any of the "mass appealing" DNA here, and instead will experience a beautiful challenge for the senses.

Dans Tes Bras is a deceptively silent colossus that is equal parts profound puzzlement and stunning sorcery. It is far and away, one of the most unique fragrances I have ever put my nose on, and there is nothing else quite like it that I've encountered. Granted, there is a multiverse of fragrances I haven't seen, smelled or heard of, and I am an amateur at best, but I have a modicum of confidence saying this still. It is not odd for the sake of being odd, or different for the sole reason of setting itself apart. It does so, simply by being.

Dans Tes Bras translates to "In Your Arms" and it is that very imagery that this perfume brings vividly to mind, with Roucel recreating not only the scent of flesh, but the myriad of emotions and memories associated with it. And in spite of the name, I was remarkably unprepared for the sheer intimacy that Roucel has bottled.

It is, in the truest sense, the perfect antithesis of Musc Ravageur, Roucel's other contribution to the Editions De Parfums line.

Where Musc Ravageur is bold, basking in it's formidable and well deserved hauteur, passionate and shamelessly sinful, exuding carnality and opulence, Dans Tes Bras is a quiet embrace, far more personal, far more erotic, the embodiment of passion and its aftermath, lacking perhaps the overt exuberance of the former, it forgoes none of the risqué qualities.

Dans Tes Bras goes beyond simply the physical nature of passion, but takes a beautiful, almost surreal approach to the concept of love. Oddly enough, it uses has far more musk than Musc Ravageur, so perhaps the "real" Musc Ravageur is Dans Tes Bras, and vice versa.

The musk used here is comforting and warm, a pillowy cloud in fact, with a metallic, almost earthy undertone to it. It is a strange contrast, the cold metal an obviously odd addition to the warm musk, but the combination of the two is uncanny, evoking a multitude of emotions, and an almost visceral response. The sensation of skin melding with skin, the warmth of thereof, kissed by the cool air above it, elicits a comfort that I have not experienced from a fragrance before. This is the embodiment of olfactive magic.

Everything about this perfume brings alive a sense of security and sensuality in equal doses, emulating the scent and taste of skin, salty, ferric, radiant and warm. Every note chosen by Maurice Roucel, the cashmeran, the heliotrope, the violets, the clove, the musk, each play a vital role in bringing the orchestral symphony of physical union and passion to life.

What Maurice Roucel set out to capture here, was a herculean task; Bottling the warmth of a tender hug, and the fleeting whiff of its scent, to create the aroma of skin meeting skin, to replicate it without being bawdy or uncouth, should have been impossible. And yet, he did.

Dans Tes Bras will capture the wearer in an embrace of warm musks and Cashmeran, intermingled with a soft, powdery violet. It will put forth the spice from clove in a manner bordering on pornographic, but temper it with the sweetness from the heliotrope and sandalwood. It plays with incense, giving a sacred, almost religious tinge to the experience, while bringing it back down from the realm of the divine with the dark, earthy patchouli. Everything within Dans Tes Bras exists, as it does, in nature. In two parts, light and dark. So much so, in fact, that it smells almost masculine on women, and feminine on men, which I feel is what Roucel wanted. After all, with a shared embrace, there will always be remnants from one on the other.

I confess, however, that this was perhaps the most difficult fragrance I've ever had the pleasure to review. Not simply because of its simplistic complexity, but also because of how it wears. It is, in truth, a second skin. An absence of fragrance as much as it is a dense perfume. This is something that has to be experienced time and time again. It has to be wooed, seduced, before it begins to divulge any of its secrets. One has to be patient, because this is art, and requires patience to grasp, and will rarely ever be love and first sniff. It takes time to understand this juxtaposition of eroticism and passion intimacy

It is beautiful in a way few things are, ethereal and yet shockingly tangible. And for me, something I will never let go. Dans Tes Bras, like Musc Ravageur, is perfection.
