In Pyrgos, Cyprus, a perfume factory was discovered dating back to around 1850 BC, the year in which the site was destroyed by an earthquake thanks to which many finds have been found still in situ today by an Italian mission. In particular, two distillation apparatuses were found that constitute the first examples of alembic in history, which pushes back the knowledge of distillation by over 2600 years, until today considered an Arab invention of the 7th century AD.
