Are ratings meaningful? Musings of an outsider.

I ask myself: should I rate anything at all? I can express my likes and dislikes through rating, but what use is it for anyone? I’ve got no credentials. Anyone can join here whether they know anything about perfumery in the technical sense, historical terms, have sufficient experience or aesthetic development. If the gates are not kept, how important are all those competencies? Apparently not if anyone can rate.

Conversely, what do I do with ratings that come from people with alternative tastes? Some perfumes, I will detest no matter how illustrious their history may be or how rapturous and reverential opinions of veterans (and those who defer to their authority). Some may advise to learn from one’s betters to refine and elevate one’s preferences. But what if one doubts the superiority of such preferences? Can someone who is accustomed to classical scents do justice to a gourmand, for example? Are classical scents intrinsically superior to gourmands? Are older traditions necessarily superior to new trends? Or are they just different, and maybe those who are partial to a certain genre should not rate outside of their favoured genre since their negativism is too predictable?

Another uncertainty of mine. Compare the ratings for individual fragrances here and on alternative websites. They are all over the place. Some fragrances are rated high here but apparently only because just a few people have rated them so far. The more people rate, the likelier it is that the rating would go down. How many votes are needed in statistical terms to reflect something of an objective nature? How useful are ratings that are provisional and discrepant across platforms?

To conclude, should rating be viewed like a game which has no meaning outside of itself?

I’m new to the website. If these matters have been brought up and thrashed out before, I apologise for the redundancy.

I like ratings and I take a close look at people’s ratings all the time. The ratings may say very little about the perfume itself, but much more so about the reviewer. If the reviewer gives similar scores to mine, that indicates to me that his/her reviews are worth following. That’s how I learn about new perfumes that may be worth trying.

Thanks for that. That’s what I expected myself too when I got onto my first perfume website (this one is my second and last): that I could find others with similar tastes to draw upon. But that did not work, at least for me, because in most cases I found that people who loved some items I did also hated some items I loved and vice versa. So, this is what I’ve found in practice.

I think ratings / reviews are important depending on where you're at in your journey. At the beginning they were important to me because I needed help into all of this. I based myself on other people's ratings and musings to figure out where I needed to start and what I needed to try at first. Now, I read them because I like figuring where people stand on a particular perfume, but I don't always use them to figure out what to try. I take into consideration what has been said and compare it to what I feel when spritzing. I also love reading what other people have to say, but that's me.

That makes perfect sense. Thanks for sharing.

I think the idea is that if enough people rate, all of our failings/lack of credentials will balance out. There are fans of gourmands, classical scents, new trends, and old traditions who all rate the same fragrance. An obvious failing of this, which you pointed out, is if enough people don't rate the fragrance, the score will not be balanced and you should take that into consideration. But all in all, I find rating useful, but mostly to see how hyped/popular a perfume is rather than its artistic merit.

Yes, that’s a sensible approach. Thanks for responding.

Hi, your well put together thoughts echo what has been dancing around my mind this week and I reached a conclusion just this morning that ratings are subjective and are neither a guarantor of success nor of failure. There is no redundancy to your article, only well structured musings 🥂
