Cryptic, apparently that part is true. For something like three years, she stayed at Etienne Balsan's estate as a live-in putain. I mean, he supported her for sex, so that's the equivalent of concubine, non? When he threw parties, she ate in the kitchen with the servants and wasn't allowed to mingle with the guests!!! I was shocked the first time I watched the film. I watched it three times before reviewing it. The conditions which she endured were incredibly demeaning. I couldn't believe it either!!!!
