FRAGRANCE IS FUNCTIONAL

How I learned to stop worrying about art and enjoy my perfume for what it is.

I'll write to you when I return to FBook, Gold! Probably in August. ;-)

Very glad to hear that! Good luck with your book - is it a work of fiction? Just curious...

No worries, Gold, I'll continue to write about perfume. I'm doing the wax sample haiku this month because I'm trying to finish a book about something else. I can only do one "big" thing at a time. ;-)

Yes, in a certain sense you are right and I have to agree - but then again - if you ask yourself the question which of these pleasures you'd "sacrifice" (assuming you'd have to do such a thing) - could you clearly opt for your ability to enjoy music? You know, I am torn. Without perfume, my life would be horrible. Without music, it would be unbearable...

And you write so much and so brilliantly about perfume... I hope your manifesto doesn't announce the end of your review-writing/blogs/essays? It could be understood that way. I'd really miss your presence and your contributions!!!

Hello, Gold! Thank you for your challenging reply to my latest manifesto. I may have gotten a bit carried away, but I do believe that perfume as a "thing in itself" with no connection to the pleasure we derive from it is a fiction. Maybe we disagree about the definition of "functional"? I don't know, but I am convinced that there is a lot more to music than there is to perfume...

Just "functional fragrances"? Hm. I don't agree. I adore music and studied singing and the piano myself. I don't want to compare the role music plays in my life and the pleasure it gives me to the pleasure I derive from "perfumes" - somehow, dear Shera, the comparison seems inappropriate. Music is also very subjective - why is it that I feel an emotional link to Brahms and can't enjoy rap music? Music is processed in a different part of our brains - it's simply a different SENSE - but not necessarily a more complex or nobler "experience". Music can't be put into words- neither can be perfume. Wouldn't you agree? There's as much muzac and "functional music" as there is "functional" perfume. I don't like the idea of a hierarchy of the senses. Greetings from J.
