Caught Out There - I'm De-collecting
"I hate you so much right now!" I jokingly chose this song to capture the energy of my separation with my fragrance collection. I've entered a new era in my life, one more focused on distillation than accumulation. I've been a minimalist for a while, so my perfume collection isn't large in physical size, but the end result of the micro collecting is still the same - overwhelm and dispassion.
I just don't love my fragrances equally. I look at everything I carry with me as an extension of myself, and holding onto things that aren't meant to be mine anymore doesn't align with my values. It gives me joy to give away these little pieces of what once was. I have a few fragrances that fill me with delight when I sniff them, and that allows me to experience joy distilled. That's what I want from fragrance, and what I want for others as well.
I listened to Caught Out There this morning as Tam Dao and Orpheon played together (fragrances of the day) and I changed my view on why this song belongs with this post. It was my first introduction to Kelis and potentially my first introduction to The Neptunes production sounds. This song is nostalgic and undeniably perfect (to me) because my love for it is beyond the technical, lyrical, or melodic assessment of the music. It transports me to a time in my life, to a feeling, and I like the way the memory feels. Fragrance is like that for me as well - it transports me to a feeling, a scene, and now these scents from my de-collection will do that for others, too.
Cheers!
