That would be horrible if it happened to me. To be deprived of the pleasure of perfumes ... to say the least. Read what happened here:

My sister doesn't smell well at all. She has severe allergies and her sinuses never cooperate. I'm not sure how she can enjoy food but she doesn't make a big deal about it...

Some patients of mine have lost their sense of smell due to chemo. Luckily it comes back (most of the time), but it makes it difficult for them to eat. They avoid ice cream, pudding, and applesauce especially.

The article only mentions it obliquely, but I bet that a lot of folks that lose their sense of smell lose it do to inhaling things, i.e. various illegal drugs.
