3 year old 40 Knots lost all of its marine salty notes

I just picked up a 3 year old batch of the Xerjoff 40 Knots. I had samples of it and every time I smelled it I knew I had to buy it in a bottle. 
The smell stood out to me because I really like fresh scents which also contain darker woodier, sweeter accords. Whenever I smelled it I just got beach vibes, a day at the beach and going back to the holiday apartment completely full of salt on the skin.

But now? All these scent notes are almost gone and I immediately get strong and sweet amber notes that last the whole process. No marine notes, no salty fresh notes at all. Just pure woodyness and sweetness from the start to finish. It‘s not that it‘s bad, I actually really like it that way, but it bothers me. I bought it for the next vacations but right now it seems almost like a scent for the colder days

Does anyone have the same issue with their old Xerjoff 40 Knots?

This is interesting because I never got anything marine from 40 Knots and always wondered the concept and the name. To my nose it has always smelled very sweet and woody, like a cheap version of Tobacco Vanille Eau de Parfum, nothing marine or fresh in it and I could never wear it during hot weather. My husband used to get marine from it in the past but now he is also getting only sweet and woody too. Have you compared a spray from your bottle and a spray from a fresh new bottle (for example a tester in a shop) side by side? Is it really your fragrance that has changed or is this perfume just built that way that it's playing tricks with our noses?

What @Lempi said. I tested 40 Knots a year and a half ago, and despite all the yacht club hype, I did not smell it as a marine or aquatic fragrance. 

+1 on the feeling, I have a sample of 40 Knots and I could never see it as a marine/ breezy scent. I just get mainly ambery and some woody accords, no saltiness whtasoever, still good but I wouldnt wear it on high heat 🤔

Wow I'm so happy to hear that I'm not alone! I was thinking at some point if I'm completely crazy or if there's something wrong with my nose when I'm not getting these hyped marine vibes at all 😅 I love marine fragrances but 40 Knots was a huge disappointment. It's not bad but it's definitely not worth the price nor the salty marine beauty that I expected.
