40 Knots XerJoff 2012

Finding Atlantis (in the wrong place).
Having spent some time with 40 Knots, I feel mentally ready to share my perspective. The initial marketing for this scent, suggesting a "Yachting Club" theme within Xerjoff's "Join the Club" line, feels a bit disconnected from the actual aroma. It seems more likely that an existing formula was used to fill that conceptual gap, rather than the fragrance being designed with a marine concept in mind from the start. As a consumer, without prior knowledge, it's difficult to associate this scent with the sea or any kind of associated "lifestyle"... so, I will keep looking for Atlantis!

From the moment it touches the skin, there's an immediate impression of salty woods and resins. The saltiness likely comes from a prominent use of ambroxan, while the woody notes point to a significant presence of Iso E Super. This opening is quite elegant.
While I do pick up on the salty aspect, any strong resemblance to fragrances like Megamare, as some have suggested, is borderline hallucinatory.

As the fragrance evolves, a soft creaminess emerges, and the woody notes become more pronounced. There's a subtle sweetness, possibly from coumarin, and a touch of green, perhaps violet. The scent settles into a pleasant dry-down that isn't either strong or subtle. For this reason, it feels best suited for occasions where you're dressed a bit more formally, like when wearing a shirt (or linen shirt, if you want to feel part of the club).

It has been mentioned before, and I agree on this one. 40 Knots brings to mind Ambre Nuit Eau de Parfum, a fragrance I don't particularly favor. While Ambre Nuit evokes a sense of elegance (in my mind, an old-er elegant woman vibe), 40 Knots incorporates a woody character that leans masculine and contemporary.
Overall, I find myself liking it. However, its versatility, in my opinion, is somewhat limited. I tend to reserve 40 Knots for office wear or more formal events.

One notable advantage of this fragrance is its availability at more accessible prices. Due to the initial Xerjoff own marketing and (scripted/imposed) influencer campaigns, many who purchased it blindly might have expected a very different scent profile. This has led to it being found more readily on the secondary market. If you're considering 40 Knots, I recommend sampling it first rather than blind buying.

Aquatic? Where?
40 Knots is a surprising fragrance. Xerjoff promises to transport you to a luxurious sailing lifestyle with a taste of freedom coming from open water and colorful marine life. Sounds like an aquatic freshie, right? Well, it dries down to a sweet, powdery scent.

Upon spraying, it's abstractly sweet, then it develops into a blend of calone, honey and salt. There's also a floral undertone and the overall impression reminds me of a sea breeze with comforting sweetness. This phase lasts for about 30-45 minutes before it ventures into the more warm and resinous territory.

It's worth noting that the honey-like nuance also has a boozy twist to it, which immediately makes me think of myrrh. However, the more it dries down, the more powdery it becomes, so it could be a honey note mixed with amber accord. It's harder to tell on skin, but spray it on a strip and compare - it's boozier on paper.

Another strange thing about 40 Knots is a spicy facet, introduced 1.5 hours into the wear. The drydown phase has dry woodiness to it, which might be cedarwood. At this point, the scent profile is woody, resinous, powdery, sweet and spicy, with boozy and floral aspects. Not quite a marine experience, but perhaps something a yacht owner would wear.

Performance is good, it lasts for 10 hours on my skin with soft projection. It's more versatile than the aquatic tag would suggest, given its ambery charater. If you're hoping for a freshie, you'll either be disappointed or surprised. Yes, the opening is refreshing, but it morphs into a warm perfume with lingering sweetness. Maybe it was reformulated, who knows?

Pure Luxury in a Bottle
40 Knots is one of the most surprising fragrances in my collection. When you hear the name and see the bottle, you immediately assume it's going to be a fresh summertime ocean scent. And with all of the designer and budget fresh summer offerings, what is the point of paying niche prices for an aquatic fragrance? Thankfully, 40 Knots goes in a completely different direction, giving you more of a woody-amber fragrance with some saltiness at the top. It's so beautifully blended and is one of the most luxurious smells I have ever experienced. I love how much depth this fragrance has and how it develops differently every time I wear it. Sometimes it's this fizzy coca-cola smell, sometimes it's this clean and powdery babywipe like smell, while other times it has this luxurious creamy woody(sandalwood?) scent with some crisp airy saltiness coming through. I absolutely love wearing this one since I never know how it's going to come across that day. Longevity and projection are excellent on this one, easily going for 8-10+ hours on my skin with a louder projection. And I'd say it is safe to wear any season and time of day, but I would ease up on the trigger on the more scorching days. As far as Xerjoff fragrances go, this is definitely one of the safer mass appealing options that you can go with. It's up there with my top 3 Xerjoff scents along with Monkey Special and Torino21.

Overall, not really a marine or aquatic fragrance
40 Knots opens with a very strange scent. Not really sure how to describe it. Maybe a mix a marine and woody notes? It didn't last long though. As it dried down, it started to become sweet, perhaps too sweet for me. The overly sweet phase didn't last very long either and then a woody accord appeared and an extreme powdery accord s well. For the most part, 40 Knots is not at all a marine or aquatic scent, the name and blue bottle notwithstanding. To sum up, it's really a mild woody/powdery fragrance.

Performance overall is quite good with very good sillage and projection. By the time I showered and changed for the evening, it was going quite strong - about 10 hours after I first applied it.

For me, 40 Knots is a dislike because I don't like strong powdery fragrances. However, if you like powdery scents, you may want to give it a try, especially with such great performance.

it really is a marine interpretation of Ambre Nuit. Airy and not too sweet, Better than the Dior imo. Classy for anytime and everywhere

It starts sweet, spicy (cinnamon) and aquatic. In the drydown it's powdery (iris), salty (ambergris), green (vetiver) and woody (cedarwood).

Fresh/salty opening with smooth honey.
On my skin, the drydown is warm/spicy.
There's a resinous facet; first boozy, then powdery and sweet.

Spicy-sweet opening that transitions to a creamy, weird-yet-lovely summer essential. It's non-aquatic, hard-to-classify sumptuousness.
