Hello DaKatt,
It can feel a bit strange and overwhelming when you find yourself in this world of fragrances, especially if you had never really imagined ending up here. I've enjoyed fragrances for 40+ years but it was only a couple of years ago that I started taking a deeper interest, and from there it became a passion, perhaps even an obsession.
I don't know how it will be for you, but for me it ebbs and flows. Sometimes I will go for months with an absolute focus and then I'll get a little bored with it and enjoy the other areas of my life, until I pick it up again. Main thing is, you control it, don't let it control you. It's a journey of exploration that can be incredibly enjoyable, but there are people who let it become all-comsuming and unhealthy.
Early on, if you are like me, the temptation is to go out and buy lots of full bottles, based on what you might have read, or more likely on what is on YouTube or other social media. So-called "influencers" on these platforms will tempt you into buying whatever they are promoting. And although they might seem to be offering an objective opinion, make no mistake, in most cases it is promotion. After my first couple of months watching them I stopped completely. Instead, I now research notes and accords here and on other dedicated fragrance sites, where 99% of the time there is no hidden agenda in reviews.
As mentioned above, the temptation is to buy lots. That's what I started off doing and I soon regretted it, because I made a few costly mistakes. I now always sample before buying a full bottle. Fortunately, where I am in the UK, there are many good suppliers of decants, so I buy lots.
Nowadays, for me, it's not just about finding scents I like and buying a full bottle, it's more about experiencing lots of fragrances and building my knowledge of them.
It's a great hobby, enjoy the journey.
