... Elijahrb67 Ringtale A family of taste I see! I don't hear much of "First (Eau de Toilette) | Van Cleef & Arpels" so that's definitely cool to see. I faintly remember someone in my family wearing "Apple Blossom (Perfume) | Helena Rubinstein" as well but I think it was someone who was rather distant. I'm with you on "Poison (Eau de Toilette) | Dior" though. It's always been a bit screechy for my tastes. Something tells me it is a reformulation issue, but I still don't know if I'd be a fan, even with older iterations. My mother was from 1922 and I'm sure she wore it when it just came out (it was a real hype then :-)) So it is not about reformulation I guess, it gave me a huge headache. I loved "Mitsouko (Eau de Parfum) | Guerlain" (an older formulation ofcourse) on her and I love- and have that one (the one from the legendaires line is absolutely stunning!) myself too...:-)

... My Mom loved and wore a lot of perfumes, mostly Dior's and Guerlains. But also "Apple Blossom (Perfume) | Helena Rubinstein" (I sometimes took a spritz of that, loved it too :-)) I always loved what she would wear, except for "Poison (Eau de Toilette) | Dior" (hate that scent!) I don't think she ever wore Chanel, not even No 5. I remember when "Boudoir (Parfum) | Vivienne Westwood" came out and how we both loved that one. (So sad it is discontinued). My dad didn't care that much, I never talked about perfume with him. My brother likes perfumes, he used to LOVE Eau Sauvage, but he doesn't like the current formula; He was very happy when I gave him "Vetiver (Eau de Toilette) | Guerlain" and I think he likes "Le Beau Le Parfum | Jean Paul Gaultier". My sister wears "First (Eau de Toilette) | Van Cleef & Arpels" , she doesn't like many perfumes, she's over sensitive when it come's to citrus, she smells the smallest amounts of it in any scent and will hate it for it.

What kind of reviews are helpful?

... DRKSHDW I like descriptive reviews where they paint a character, showing what kind of person wears the fragrance. But technical details are important, too. Performance, and what fragrance family it belongs to. Is it more gourmand or floral, or an equal mix of both? What notes stand out? I want a good balance of interesting descriptions and the "personality" the scent represents. Is it innocent, dark, or promiscuous? "From the future", or does it smell like a "blast from the past"? Comparisons with other scents can be tricky. I like them, but sometimes they are way off. For example, if someone is just starting their fragrance journey and has tried 10 perfumes, one of them being La Vie Est Belle, and they notice the sweetness, they might write that all sweet perfumes remind them of La Vie Est Belle, even though the only thing they share is sweetness. I’m always wary of comparisons. And "nose blindness". Because some people are anosmic to entire accords and attack other reviewers personally, claiming they are lying about what they smell. I detest the passive-aggressive reviews bashing other reviews. I agree about the comparisons: Like every aldehydic perfume is being compared to Chanel No 5; it often doesn't make sense.

... Maison Crivelli...Ofcourse I haven't tried all of their perfumes, so maybe I'm missing out on something, but I didn't like any of the 5 scents from a discovery-set I had. Too bold and obvious imo. Diptyque: I own two and appreciate them objectively, but it's a bit like playing russian roulette to spray them because they perform so differently on my skin, each time I wear them. Very strange ( and unfortunate :-( ).

... Good morning, Wearing a cheapy today: "Madame Rochas (2014) | Rochas" Doesn't smell cheap in any way and it has some distant No 19 vibes, but more friendly. Good sillage and projection.

... "24, Faubourg (Eau de Parfum) | Hermès" One or two sprays will do. It's been long since I wore this. Quite an indolic opening, but beautyful drydown. Have to wear it more often.

... The smell ofcourse, though some ugly bottles can make me reluctant to try it. I'd choose a minimalistic bottle over something like "Fame (Eau de Parfum) | Rabanne" (hate the bottle and don't like the scent, but if the scent were gorgeous I may have bought it anyhow and keep the bottle in the box :-)).

... 140 euro's for a Hermes but I had a voucher worth 100 euro's (along with my purchase of a washing machine, lol). I spend two times 175 euro's on Diptyque's and the scents were okay but didn't make up for the guilt I felt spending this much. Same goes for all cheaper scents I blind bought at the beginning of my fragrance journey.... Now I only buy scents I already know or tested and I won't go over 100 euro's.

Prestige or uniqueness?

Perfume Discussions
... I don't think uniqueness is exclusively reserved for niche brands; I smelled some niche scents that weren't that special or unique and I smelled designer fragrances that were quite interesting...so... I also don't think a 'safe' choice is necessarily recognizable, you can wear something 'safe' without anyone recognizing what you're wearing. I mean "Fleur de Peau (Eau de Parfum) | Diptyque" is niche, but hardly unsafe :-). But...I think I'd go for something that would make me feel 'me'. I mean: it is no use for me to wear a 'classy' chypre while spilling wine and food during the whole event (being a rather clumsy person 😃). What they see is what they'll get :-). And...ones perfume is just a fraction of the whole picture after all :-).

... Hi everyone, Taking the risk of not wanting to wear anything else after spraying this on (this happened to me the last time after wearing it almost daily because I love this scent so much and which is why I hadn't worn it for some time (felt like any other perfume I own had been a waste of money): "Infusion d'Iris (Eau de Parfum) (2015) | Prada" Have a lovely smelling day!

... Oh, I somehow overlooked this thread, but funny that "Blue Grass (1989) | Elizabeth Arden" isn't mentioned yet! It is composed for Elizabeth Arden to illustrate the feel of horse stables in Kentucky. (there's even a horse on the bottle :-)) It is very cheap (so for that matter, a safe blind buy), but many find it lovely. Light scent, but with strong projection and sillage.

... I have a problem with sandalwood too sometimes: In "Samsara (Eau de Parfum) | Guerlain" I get so very weary and exhausted from the sandalwood because it is so very 'distinct' and in "N°5 (Eau de Parfum) | Chanel" (but the newest bottle, I must add) the sandalwood also is very prominent on my skin, almost like Samsara.

... I always find that "Mitsouko (Eau de Parfum) | Guerlain" suits fall very, very well, there is some mystery going on in Mitsouko, but I find it cozy aswell :-) Not a safe blind buy though (but which perfume is :-)?), so sample first...

... Oh...the times I blind bought perfumes based on reviews (or on note-pyramids for that matter)... Well, I don't do that anymore. Because even 'sweet' can be something that I perceive as 'spicy' or whatever... 'Soapy' can be like shampoo or like an aldehydic fat bar of soap...Same goes for 'clean'...which could be either aquatic or more lotion-like... Powdery may be either warm or cold, babywhipe-ish or cosmetic...etc. etc. And notes are all about the blending. I can hate Oakmoss in one perfume and love it in another for instance. I rather look up the ratings and, after having spend some time over here, I'm beginning to recognize the preferences of people that seem to come close to mine. But I do like to read reviews and most of the time, those that describe a certain mood or feeling one gets from a scent, get me interested. But never will I blind buy a perfume, based on reviews or pyramids again. What really bothers me are reviews that tell stories rather than that they describe a perfume.

... That's a hard one! I know the smell of the lotion very well and I do get your association with 'clean' in a way, but I also find it a bit medicinal...wouldn't know any perfume that smells like it.
