Can someone explain this to me?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this hobby and confused about something. I had this little body mist years and years ago, Pink Sweet Pea Fantasy, which I hated. Recently I got another body mist, Pomegranate Raspberry, but I dislike it because it smells to me like the aforementioned mist. I'm trying to figure out what these scents have in common that I despise. The common note is raspberry but Sugar Berry Body Spray includes raspberry and I like that one. Maybe something to do with how the raspberry interacts with other notes? Thanks in advance for any replies!

Oh this is funny!! I never made the connection between these two, but I also feel the same way about them. I'm normally a big fan of EOS and Body Fantasies too, but these fragrances aren't my favorites. I tolerate Pomegranate Raspberry, but even the shaving cream never made me happy, and I had a hand cream in that scent years ago that I ended up getting sick of quickly, and I gave it away. On my daughter, the Sweet Pea Fantasy is ok in the air, but I still dislike it at close range on her when I hug her, and I hated it on my skin. 

Unfortunately, I'm not much help. I think it's the high-pitched sweetness of the red fruit combined with sugary florals? But as far as a throughline between the two, or aromachemicals themselves, I have no advice.

It could be that eos and body fantasies present their raspberry note in a similar manner, while good chemistry does it differently. Perfumers haven't been able to extract viable essential oil from actual raspberries, so the raspberry we smell in fragrances is synthetic - created in a lab. Depending on interpretation and recreation methods, different brands and perfumers will produce different raspberry notes / accords.

On top of that, pink sweet pea fantasy and pomegranate raspberry both contain tart notes (grapefruit, passionfruit, rhubarb jam); it could be that you don't like how these interact with raspberry!

What a coincidence you've tried the same two and feel the same! For me though the Pomegranate Raspberry shaving cream smelled nice, which is what compelled me to get the mist. 

The interaction between raspberry and tart notes seems plausible. I'll steer clear of ordering scents with this combination until I collect more field data. Although it could be due to the production of raspberry like you said. Good Chemistry uses natural ingredients so maybe they utilize a more natural synthetic raspberry (oxymoronic but maybe the case)? I don't have any knowledge on the production of fragrance.

Oh gotcha! I didn't actively dislike the shaving cream, but I definitely preferred their "Lavender Jasmine" (I think they quit making it?), or Vanilla Bliss 😊  The shaving cream is more tart than the hand cream or the mist. The lip balm was OK IMO, I have friends who favor the Pomegranate Raspberry, but it was lower on my list of options. 

Sometimes I struggle with sweet, red fruit accords. Do you? I cannot even abide cherry at all.

It always sucks when brands discontinue good products😞 I've only tried their unscented lotion, shaving cream, and back in the day had some lip balms. They were fun at the time but inconveniently shaped and contain drying ingredients. My younger siblings would sneak and bite my eos balms lol. For the most part the brand definetely lives up to their name on making your skin smooth. 

I'm going off a pretty limited experience with scents but I don't think I struggle with that accord. I know that cherry fragrances often remind people of medicine. Is that the case for you?

Interestingly, the lip balm is really effective for me personally, and my husband and kids. Everyone's skin is different though! That's funny about your siblings haha! The balms smell good enough to eat, I guess 🤣

It's a real bummer when things get discontinued! Absolutely! Cherry reminds me of cough syrup. But in all honesty, I think I also dislike syrupy fruits sometimes in fragrance...simply because I do, associations notwithstanding.

Their balms do leave a nice taste on the lips. That's interesting that for you they don't have the drying effect. I'm not sure how common it is with their balms though and I don't remember in my case. 

Honestly I haven't tried a perfume with cherry in it that I know of, but I've been interested. I hope it doesn't give cough syrup for me too.

I thought it was interesting too! I remember EOS went through some lawsuits years ago because so many people reacted so badly to their balms haha! 🤣 Burt's Bees actually messes my lips up if you can believe that....I can't fathom suing a company simply because it's incompatible with your skin though, that's crazy. 

I hope you can try some cherry stuff and enjoy it! There's a lot of good options out there. It seems like the cherry trend has died down a little, but it's still a major note.

I've heard that about Burt's Bees and it is surprising. Since a child I always saw them as a "holy" brand lol. I can't fathom those lawsuits either, but speaking of big companies I do wish that if they're going to push their products onto us, that they at least warn of the potential risks. But y'know, that wouldn't be good for business. I myself have suffered severe acne due to skincare products, of which I'm still healing from.

I didn't know cherry was trending before. It seems vanilla is the current trend?
