Layering two heavy scents

Layering two heavy scents 0
I've just tried Van Py Rhum for the first time and loved it, but I cannot stop thinking about the idea of layering it with Baraonda Extrait de Parfum .

I've never layered a fragrance before, and from what I see online people talk about spraying the heavier one first, followed by the lighter fragrance, but I'm not really sure which would be the ideal first one to spray, or if it would been work as a layering combo.

The scent I'm picturing is just a much more boozy vanilla, as I find the rum note in Van Py Rhum only lasts around an hour on my skin, and I can't stop imaging the booziness of Baraonda Extrait de Parfum just taking the rich, dark sweetness of Van Py Rhum to another level!

If anyone has every tried this layer, or just ahs any thoughts on if it would work well or be too cloying, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!

I'm not heavily into layering, but occasionally I do feel that I need to elevate the fragrance I am wearing in some way. Today is a good example:

Weather here has been quite chilly and stormy and so I wanted something warm with depth. I also wanted something uncompromising for a business meeting, but it had to be approachable too.

I opted for three sprays of ...

Iron Duke

under my shirt. This a fairly strong scent, with notes of gunpowder, leather, tobacco, and musk. It's moderately smoky and animalic.

I felt it set the right tone but needed something to lift it and so I added three sprays of ...

Late Harvest

to my cravat. Late Harvest has notes of moderate sweet cherry pipe tobacco, dried dark fruits, and creamy oats.

Instinctively, I do feel it's right to spray the heavier fragrance first, which is what I did above. However, I think it really just comes down to experimenting. Try various combinations and see which work.

I don't have either of those scents, but I do a fair amount of layering.

When I have two heavier scents, I spray them on different parts of my body.  For example, I might spray the first one on my inner elbows and the second one on my collarbones or nape of the neck.  The "scent bubble" allows them both to shine and mix without one overpowering the other, as they might if you spray one on top.

Also, if one "fades" faster than the other (assuming it's not because of nose blindness), you might want to try a small smear of vaseline before you spray or apply the scent.  It helps fragrance to last longer on your skin.

As someone who layers a lot of the time and yeah I have heard the rule that you should put the stronger fragrance first but honestly I have done things all different ways and found amazing results. Try both ways as sometimes the order of the notes makes a difference in the smell. I can't think of an example but I have layered 2 fragrances in different order and had a far better outcome. If one is a bit weaker give it some more sprays than the other.

Try spraying in other areas instead of the usual on top of the other . Sometimes that works better for example just next to each other.

So, just experiment and have fun with it. And yeah Van Py Rhum is a gorgeous fragrance 🥰
