The social ambiguities of fragrance

...light dabbed on application but that is just how my nose likes it. That's why I couldn't understand my ex in laws' reaction. But I think that Cryptic has a point in bringing up the puritanical culture we live in: Anything that taps into our senses as profoundly as scent does will no doubt cause...

The social ambiguities of fragrance
by Cryptic | Perfumes & Brands
...There is no correct answer. A small percentage of people can't tolerate scent. One perfumephobe I know is perfectly legit. She also wheezes at diesel exhaust, fireplace smoke, etc., so she ain't faking it.Then you have the puritans, who equate wearing perfume with waving the prostie flag or something. There are lots of different reasons, but I do opt for subtle at work, for instance, because a coworker was once sent home for reeking. The poor guy had been clearing his driveway with a snowblower so that he could come to work. The gas fumes had saturated his hair and clothing, and he did smell pretty toxic.

...Fragrantica. FRAGRANTICA. Will you look at that? I can type the name of a competing site without being censored. I wonder why they censor Parfumo and not Basenotes?

Politics and Perfume ...
by Cryptic | Off Topic
...For a huge Duchaufour fangirl it is depressing as hell. At the same time, it doesn't seem fair to penalize the niche companies that hired him before this transpired by boycotting his work. I still crave a bottle of Mohur, and I can't see taking out his blunder on a small concern like Neela Vermeire, who is probably struggling as it is to get established.

...The admins over at Fragrantica can be frustrating. Hardly a week goes by without a new thread looking for the sexiest perfume, "man magnet," etc. In a rare moment of helpfulness, I made up an FAQ that contained links to most of the questions that kept popping up on a regular basis to make life easier for the newbies. Instead of putting the thread in a heavily-trafficked forum where the newbies might actually see it, the admins buried it in the chat forum, a place where new members seldom venture, and my effort was completely wasted. Needless to say, I'm done being helpful over there.

EXILED! The stories from Defected Fragrantican Members

...Dolby:MiaTrost:... many seem to lack the ability of using Search functionalities before posting a thread. This results in massive repetition of topics, which is a total bore; let alone the often pointless content.Yes, this is an aspect that absolutely bores me to tears. I feel that the demographics are somehow different here too. Although there are people interested in what I consider Perfumery with a capital P on Fragrantica, there is also a hell of a lot of Victoria Secret body spray enthusiasts and Paris Hilton & co fans.An enormous amount of topics seem to centre around the issues of finding the sexiest frag, or engaging in "games" where the aim is to allocate perfumes to Disney characters for example. :roll:Very juvenile and not stimulating for the grey matter at all, but then I guess that's what you get when admin want to play it so safe that anything deemed the slightest bit controversial gets deleted. All this is not helped by the many members who appear completely incapable of debating in a mature fashion. All in all, I'm pretty much exclusively sticking to my perso thread now.I agree with all of this. In addition, I don't appreciate being told that if I want a bottle of perfume, I ought to save up my loose change in a jar until I have enough and that sort of patronizing nonsense. It's almost like large collections are puritanically frowned upon over there.
