The hobby of collecting

...the street. SQUISH! It's such a great way to get around. Much more personal and connected to the community around you than cruising in a locked car.DutchSniffer, I too have a collection of nail varnishes. I primarily stick to the brand OPI. I have close to 100 of them I think. Funny thing is, I didn't wear...

...Thanks for the link Pipette, read through and yes, makes perfect sense. It is something I already knew about, but now it's described how (and why) it happens.

Drink/Food Of The Day
by DutchSniffer | Off Topic
...Saw speculatis cookies were mentioned.. they are for sale year-round here, except they change form around St Nicholas.BTW, the Lidl now also sells Spekulatis (speculaas) ice cream at the end of year. Too bad I'm trying to stay away from wheat/gluten due to an intolerance.Speaking of fragrance association.. like 5 o'clock au gingembre quite a bit. But there's another SL scent that I shied away from that some adore and others dislike a lot: Jeux de peauSpeaking of food.. generally I'm not too keen on food notes that are very prominent. As a major licorice (Lakritz) addict it was almost a surprise I didn't like Lolita Lempicka (same for Brin de Réglisse or petite robe noire or B*men) with some exceptions, like in Méchant Loup where it is mixed with hazelnut or Magnifico (mixed with Myrrh and fig). Speaking of fig.. that's a note that works very well in fragrance! This list is not from memory, just going through my own spreadsheet 8) . Related to food: fig nut jam is a fave, mine comes (still?) from Syria and has figs, sesame seeds , some walnuts and some almonds in it. Speaking of brussel sprouts, sprinkle them with shredded coconut and add sambal (ground pepper paste). Yum!

Basenotes/Parfumo Comparison
by DutchSniffer | Parfumo Community
...A few observationsFor me Fragrantica.com was the first forum to subscribe and BN next, but I never participated in threads for some reason as I enjoy the visually more pleasing database of F. While not fond of using a smart phone, sometimes you have no choice, like a few weekends ago when going to a perfume collectors fair and finding myself unfamiliar with a scent.. wanting to look it up, Fragrantica was the obvious choice.Being a number cruncher I do enjoy Parfumo a lot, especially the incredible ability to pinpoint whether it is a sample/decant or bottle, or whether it was tested or when you want to give away or sell it, put it up for sale/swap in the souk. If only I could indicate in .x ml how much is in as most samples are 1ml or smaller.Over time I've stopped posting either here or on the English fragrantica and very much enjoy the off-spring of Dutch-language Fragrantica which feels very cosy and have led to many swaps and even meetings. BUt i have to say that Pipette lured me back in to the Dutch subsection and likewise lured me to BN and to my joy discover they have a very interesting subforum, targeted to 'DIY' perfumery. Not that I'm one but sometimes it is interesting to get to know more about specific notes/ingredients. Again, something Fragrantica does quite well : giving info on notes. Anyhow, considering how both Parfumo and BN seem to run on little money it amazes me how little cooperation is between the 2.. not because of lack of desire of Parfumo, but a 'marriage' would be perfect: the incredible knowledge and plentiful discussions on one versus the technically powerful site of Parfumo.Considering how Fragrantica is run by a team who is making a living of it, it is not too hard to see why they aren't very keen on cooperation.. but I do see how ideas from parfumo are copied: like sillage and longevity of a fragrance. Damn.. now many hours have passed by while I still have tons of WORK to do!

Decanting techniques
by DutchSniffer | Perfume Discussions
...WolfM:I think I can offer adequate alternative method that may be in handy for someone. Many aerosol sprays are available with the so-called directional tube (usually technical sprays - contact cleaners, fine lubricants, etc.) Something like this:Can be found in any hardware store, or car care, auto parts store etc...Easy to use, simply replace with a new sprayer. Now, there's a catch - size of the output tubes are not standardized and may vary among manufacturers - 3 or 4 may be (I tried what fits in my bottles, of course, before offering it as a working, and this which I have - fits perfectly on around the 1/3 of my miserable collection). The good news is that aerosols also have different sizes and can be found thay you need.I hope for someone, it is useful. :) Have aromatic day!Awesome! As I wrote earlier, the syringue method would not work, not even the narrowest diabetic needles! My husband buys tons of these airdusters and I'll ask him to conserve the cans so it can be used for decanting!

What is the definition of Niche vs. Artisan?
by DutchSniffer | Perfumes & Brands
...Enjoyed your article very much SheraPop and yes, esp the discussions. It takes quite a bit time to read though.. PaulKlier, it is not so much that materials are so costly, it is the cost of advertisements (remember the multi-million dollar campaign of Chanel with Brad Pitt?), staff and above all distribution.See for instance for how little money these 3 houses (Fragonard, Galimard and Molinard) offer their fragrances.. and people don't really know where to put them... if mainstream means 'widely available in most perfume stores, then they are niche but if niche means 'expensive' then they certainly won't fit.For me niche is more about 'quaint', 'strange' 'adventurous' than about quality. If someone is an artisanal perfumer (someone who does everything him/herself) then prices can be very low.. sometimes so low that the snobs will distrust it.

...That very same video made me excited enough to buy syringues a few months ago. Alas, that was a big fat fail for the bottles I tried. Not only do some bottles not allow cap removal, like Mauboussin for instance but the syringue needles (even the thinnest diabetic needles!) were too thick for the very thin tube in the bottle.OK, so I didn't try each and every bottle I own, but the ones I tried were a failure.. so it is back to spritzing. Last time I was in a hurry and did it in the bedroom.. it still smells of tht fragrance 2-3 weeks later!

The hobby of collecting
by DutchSniffer | Off Topic
...Didn't collect much until starting on fragrances, which let loose a side of me I didn't know yet! So, the 2nd thing I took interest in just 2 months ago, quickly turned into an obsession: nail polish! Acquired at least 25 new ones in a month. The cause of this is all the wonderful pictures FB friends posted of their SOTD with their wonderfully polished nails of the day. Apparently, posting just your nails and the bottle of polish is called 'swatch'. Anyone who knows why it is called 'swatch'? Only know about a watch with that name.

...I have been so silly to not measure carded samples when ordering a storage system for them.. only to realize the drawers that looked so large on the detailed picture, are in reality only 30mm wide. The height is OK and the depth is more than adequate (150mm) so will keep it to store miniatures in a dark place. As for the syringues.. got allll excited almost a year ago about the idea of using them to withdraw from a bottle. However, EVEN diabetic needles were too thick for the few bottles I tried and NOT a single bottle allowed to be unscrewed. One of the first full bottles I thought to decant for give-away samples, is about the clumsiest in existence for that purpose: Mauboussin with a top you turn 90° to open it. Spilled about 1/3rd of the juice for decanting .. even with a siphon. Bedroom where I sat on the bed, still smells of it 2 weeks later!

Some thoughts about cats and dogs
by DutchSniffer | Off Topic
...You know I sometimes enjoy to post a pic of HRH+fragrance as SOTD-pic. Now, if there would be no picture available at all and yours would be the only one available, with the bottle being too small, I can understand being a bit grumpy about a too small fragrance pic vs a bigger cat. But there's nearly always at least 4 different pictures available, so I really don't understand the fuss.

How many discontinued perfumes do you own?
by Sherapop | Perfumes & Brands
...DutchSniffer:Seatonica , when I have a bit of free time, I'm going to see which ones of the full bottles/samples/miniatures are discontinued, at least according... Your question made me want to add yet another tidbit of info to a huge spreadsheet :)Or is there a way to do a quick search in the database?DutchSniffer, you can go to your wardrobe, and place your cursor over the picture, and whether it is discontinued or not is readable right there. No need to...
