Perfumes & Brands
... Okay, updating from about seven months ago where: Then: 1) "L'Homme | Prada" 2) "Amber pour Homme (Eau de Toilette) | Prada" 3) "Reflection Man | Amouage" 4) "Morning Chess (Eau de Parfum) | Vilhelm Parfumerie" 5) "Luna Rossa Carbon | Prada" Has changed to Now: 1) "Opus XIV - Royal Tobacco | Amouage" 2) "Jubilation 40 | Amouage" 3) "Pegasus | Parfums de Marly" 4) "Memoir Man | Amouage" 5) "Carved Oud (Extrait de Parfum) | Thameen" Not that I don't like the earlier five, I very much do, but the list has changed. I wish I could do a top 30 lol.

What fragrance do you all wear to work?
Stardust23
|
Perfumes & Brands
... I wear nearly all of my collection and samples to work except for ones that I can’t see committing to a full bottle for. For example, even after several samplings of "Overture Man | Amouage" I can’t commit to a full bottle because although it has substance…it actually stinks like someone’s unwashed crotch to me. Not trying to smell like that anywhere, including work.

Reviews - is it too much to ask to wear the scent properly?

Parfumo Community
... I'm very late to the party here (going to be agreeing indirectly with the OP)...fragrance is one of the slowest things your brain learns to judge. Olfaction is tied to memory and emotion, not language or logic. The first few times you smell something your brain is still filing it away building synaptic connections between odor molecules and the limbic system. People that are convinced they know right away are being fooled by novelty bias (when it's initially good) or a mismatch between expectation and reality (bad or good). Olfactory receptors fatigue in minutes, reform after exposure, and vary in sensitivity day to day. Even blood sugar, hormones, or humidity can change your perception of the same scent. Neurologically speaking it takes multiple exposures across different contexts before your brain has a stable pattern to compare against. In other words, if someone thinks they know immediately if they like a fragrance, their neurons are still drawing the map, and they're mistaking first impressions for expertise. I will tell on myself even in the face of above, I reviewed Amouage Timber approximately two wears after I got it. My review wasn't favorable, but logic got the best of me, and I removed my review simply because we do not know that soon. With that said, this isn't a call to change your routine....you do you, if you know instantly, nothing wrong with that, it's just the science is pretty clear: your olfactory system takes multiple exposures to actually build a reliable map.

... Will sample it when I get a chance for sure. Learned my lesson getting hyped on a new bottle from my favorite house ( "Opus XVI - Timber | Amouage" ) so will just wait to sample like I should have with Timber.

Your Perfume Hot Takes
Stardust23

Perfume Discussions
... 50scent123 My hot take is: the hobby isn't getting stale, you're just tired of the hobby itself. It's not industry's fault you went through 200 fragrances within a year. Ha, I like this take just because it’s more positive than it may come across. There is just outstanding shit out there made by absolute masters of the craft, and there may be more masters of the craft than ever.

How do you all use your perfume decants and samples?
Stardust23

Perfume Discussions
... I think I'm close to developing my 3rd strategy. Strategy 1 was to eliminate stuff that I didn't like within the first few months. Strategy 2 developed because I found that some things I come back to, I end up literally in love with. In fact, 90% of my bottles are things I didn't even like at first, but now love. Strategy 3 is...I think I know more about what I like, and won't like. Even things I don't like now, I can tell I might like them later vs. things I just don't really care for because they're mid, not my profile, or just plain stink. For example, I do not really like "Overture Man | Amouage" right now. But, I see myself potentially liking it in the future. However, I've had my sample of "Safran Colognisé | Nishane" for a long while now, and it doesn't stink at all, it's just I don't really desire to wear it. I should give it away.

How do you store/organise your fragrances
Stardust23

... I would like to maybe have them more organized but all bottles are tightly packed in a dark cold drawer. And all samples are in a cool dark, sealed storage box. So nothing fancy but not in light or heat.

Any notes on how a fragrance progressed from no to yes?

... climabro I recently reviewed "L'Autre | Diptyque" . I smelled it in the bottle or on paper in the store many times over the years and it was always armpits. They don't make samples of it, so I could never try it at home. One day, I sprayed it on my neck and scarf because it SHOULD have been everything I love. Imagine my surprise when the armpit opening faded away and I was left with beautiful citrus and Indian spices. It's even better on my partner. @climabro I totally love when this happens! Yeah, cumin can do that, but I think some of the master perfumers use it to create an artistic contrast...I've found myself wishing sometimes cumin wasn't in a fragrance, then realizing that without it, the whole composition would be compromised without it lol. I have the odd thought that, with cumin especially, it's like looking at those Magic Eye Pictures (autosterograms) where after some time, a 3D image eventually emerges. Otherwise, once our nose "sees" that 3d picture of the scent as a whole, the entire composition pops up for us to enjoy but it couldn't get there without all the notes. In both cases there is a reward for patience, and recalibration.

... RhodyRat This was def "Nanban | Arquiste" for me. When I received my sample I have no idea what happened but when I first smelled it it had this REALLY sharp animalic note, reminiscent of sour spit, maybe even kinda urine-y. Super awful. I convinced myself that I just need to give it a second and third and fourth try, and now this sour note is completely gone?? Dont get me wrong, there is an animalic tinge to this perfume, but its way subtle and honestly very appealing. This is now one of my most favorite, if not my MOST favorite fragrance ever. Its just so dark and alluring and mysterious- very goth. Im in love. "Nanban | Arquiste" looks really interesting! Will put on watch list.

... DAVID043329 "Opus XIII - Silver Oud | Amouage" for me. First time I tried it, I was instantly repulsed. That strong barnyardy smell was unlike anything I ever smelled. But arguably, given it was the first proper oud fragrance I laid my nose on, it's no surprise I reacted that way. However, the dry down had me intrigued, and with the help of many others around here on Parfumo which kept telling me to give it a couple more chances, I kept going and testing it. And now, after properly discovering it and understanding the scent, it has become one of my favorite fragrances. Went from a 5/10 to a very solid 9.5/10 Im still in “find out” mode with "Opus XIII - Silver Oud | Amouage" but I have a feeling I will get where you got too. Especially in the Fall.

... Or, just anything you remember. A favorite of mine is "Opus XIV - Royal Tobacco | Amouage" but it most definitely didn't start off that way? This is just the notes I took on how it progressed, and I'm more curious about how that's happened for any of you...The very start is before I got it, then the "Um, phew...." is when I got the sample.... I will hardly be able to distinguish anything, and it will smell like a mess, but I'll tell myself that it's not as bad as when I smelled Amouage stuff in the past, and like Interlude Man, I'll think it's possible it grows on me, but to start it will be like a 3.8. Um, phew, this was a tough one as expected. Not stinky? But, tough. 4 max right now. Not sure if this increases though. Wore it on my wrist, really small amount, I like it in the air like a tiny bit, not enough to buy not even close, but it went from 4 to 4.8. Moving it up...I'm going to say 6.5 actually. It really is not THAT bad, especially in the air. I've worn this for the day 5/28, I really, really, really lke it. I'm upping the score from 6.5 to 8.2. On 6/26, I moved it up to 9.5. I've worn it like 6-8 times in the last 2-3 months. I love it. I've worn it so much that I have a bottle on the way. It's just so great in the air, and the drydown is wonderful.

... "Bon Monsieur | Rogue" is a reasonable price. If you want Gilette then you may have to buy a 5-10ml of "Beau de Jour (Eau de Parfum) | Tom Ford" its a little more expensive than you’re asking as a bottle.

... Ceesie Stardust23 "Layton | Parfums de Marly" I think it smells like a strangers bad breath. "Terre d'Hermès Eau Très Fraîche | Hermès" is just a gross smell that has no redeeming qualities. There are many more I dislike but these two are the worst of it. What traumatic accident have you experienced to associate Layton with bad breath? It just smells SO bad that that description is the closest I can come. I ve tried different samples from PDM as well as microperfumes. It’s just bad. 1/10 for me.

Your Perfume Hot Takes

... Ursaw The differentiation between "niche" and "designer" is completely pointless and should be abandoned. Person A can draw . Person B can draw AND play a musical instrument. Both enter an unspecified theoretical drawing competition . Their victory or defeat is in no way related to their additional skillsets or lack thereof. It depends on how good they are at drawing . I am aware that I am oversimplifying things, but my point stands. And it's the same with perfumes. It makes no difference what else whoever created them is good at. They are either good at what they do or they are not. This is actually perfect (above). I've tried to describe this to folks before, and this is literally the best I've seen, and thanks. I'm all about analogies lol. Separately, on to my hot takes. 1. Agree w/Ursaw, Niche vs. Designer...pointless. &nbs p; 2. A lot of people know smell is subjective, but I don't that the public at large, and in fact, a good amount of the fragrance community know just how MUCH subjectiveness is involved. Our noses have like 400ish different types of olfactory receptor genes out of a group of about 800ish. The combo of which of these receptors function properly differs from person to person...and these genes vary A LOT between person to person. So, you might lack a receptor I have, or vice versa (and not just 1, but many receptors). For example, I'm in no way impressed by "Imagination | Louis Vuitton" but it's very clear I'm missing something that others are not as this shit is popular as heck.

... When I tried "Layton | Parfums de Marly" I was sure I would never do anything from PDM. It was the second worst fragrance Ive ever smelled. I’m probably not picking up the iso e super which would fill in the blends thus leaving only the edges and not the body. First was "Terre d'Hermès Eau Très Fraîche | Hermès" oh my gosh that was truly horrible. We all have different receptors in our noses so there’s so much variance person to person on what is being smelled
