...I am not saying it is the better perfume, but I think the current Vol de Nuit extrait is a perfect modernization and I enjoy wearing it more. It's beautifully focused on jonquil and an oriental (vanilla-ish) base devoid of the drama the vintage has. However, the vintage is the quintessential Guerlain to me. It combines everything that made Guerlain what it was.

...French for sure (e.g. Burgundy is outstanding) - everything from wine to fish/seafood, desserts to cheese (chevre etc.). I also like Indian food, but I mainly cook it myself and actually less than I used to.

...The original Tabac Blond and the vintage Habanita Extrait were definitely linked. The opening blast of the original Tabac Blond also clearly reminded me of Knize Ten. However, it is soon obvious that the original is loaded with animalics. It does remind me of the great Lanvin classics from the 1930s. If you deducted the florals (sweetness) from them, they could all - Tabac Blond included - be variations on the same theme. I also found Patou's Normandie slightly reminiscent of the original Tabac Blond. I admit I was a bit underwhelmed by the old stuff, maybe also because I am well familiar with the great Lanvins. Today Tabac Blond is so unique and there is nothing like it in its composition and blend (extrait concentration!). I only have a small decant of the old jus and I bet there are people here who hoard a bottle or two... :)

...I'm in a 'fundamental' chypré mood at the moment... I would want to push my current obsession Sous le Vent more into a dark dry hard-core chypré direction (base) without losing the brightness and fun of the top and heart - more oakmoss, a slightly more animalic touch plus labdanum partly replacing the patchouli and increasing the overall level I suppose.
