... Stick with Matiere Premiere and try "Radical Rose (Eau de Parfum) | Matière Première". It's rose and patchouli and fantastic.

fragrances that smell lunar or celestial?

... JSO60 Seltzerpapi "Eau de Luna - The Smell of the Moon | Eau de Space" is something you might want to seek out! Alternatively, "Eau de Space | Eau de Space". my understanding is that these were originally developed by or in conjunction with NASA. That's correct!

What do you think is the largest missing in perfume markets?

... Everything should be available in airplane-friendly sizes. And other brands should do what Snif and Teo Cabanel do: when purchasing a full-size bottle, they include a sample of the fragrance, as well. That way if you don't like the fragrance you can return the unopened full-size bottle for a refund. Snif even goes so far as to delay your payment for 30 days to give you time to decide.

What to do when you find a scrubber?
Seltzerpapi
|
Perfume Discussions
... I rarely come across fragrances that I find so objectionable that I feel the need to scrub them off before they've run their own course. However, it always seems that the ones I'd like to scrub off are the ones that have eternally-lingering molecules that stubbornly bond to my skin and take days to dissipate. So I'm wondering what tips and tricks the community has to remove the stubborn smells when they just won't seem to go away? I've found the following helpful in many (though sadly not all) circumstances. I've listed them in the order I do them. 1. Rubbing alcohol. Following the thought that if alcohol was the carrier to get the fragrance molecules onto my skin then it should also act as a carrier to pull them off my skin. 2. Unscented lotion. Following the thought that like removes like and the oils of the lotion will pull fragrance oils from my skin. 3. Soap and water. Truthfully, I think all this does is wash the lotion off my skin and let me know if I need to repeat the two above steps. 4. If I've done the above three steps a few times and the smell persists, I find that smearing the area with a neutral oil, like jojoba, at least reduces the projection of whatever is still stuck to my skin. And it probably can't hurt from a moisturizing perspective after the alcohol, soap, and water. I should also add that I'm not a chemist so I have no idea if any of my thought processes above are scientifically sound. 🥸

Looking for a sort of Greyish/ rainy/ concrete scent

... @Paredes183 I think"Hwyl | Aēsop" meets the greyish/rainy criteria. The cypress and frankincense are very prominent throughout. It smells like a chilly fall day — but in woods rather than in the city.

Perfumes with (noticeable) Star Anise note?

... AngeloMani "Opus XIV - Royal Tobacco | Amouage" 100%. Full-on anise in the opening. Seconding this one. Licorice and star anise as notes and very prominent at the start, but lingering through until the drydown.

... @MergScents I'm going to send you in a very different direction from the rest of the bunch and point you towards "Libertine Neroli | Francesca Bianchi" and "Sex and The Sea Neroli | Francesca Bianchi". I would definitely sample them before buying a bottle. Francesca Bianchi's work isn't for everyone. It's very dense and retro.

... @totalhecate an easy way to get exactly what you want is to buy fragrance oils that you like and mix them with unscented lotion and hair products. You could order patchouli, sandalwood, or amber oil from a place like Eden Botanicals. I've often used a couple of drops of sandalwood oil mixed with jojoba oil as a body moisturizer during the cold, dry months. If you'd rather have something that's been created by a perfumer, you could look at any of the scented oils from Cyklar ("Sacred Santal | Cyklar" is probably right up your alley). Or House of Matriarch has a product named High Beauty Oil that you'd probably like, too.

... DylanBlueBoy Hi again everyone, apologies for not responding to this sooner I have had a busy few days. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has given me their insight! I really appreciate all of it. Just to respond to the overarching themes of what most people have said here: I definitely have noted that patchouli can vary a lot in how it smells! And to touch on what @Omnipotato spoke about with note pyramids, I have definitely realized only recently that note pyramids are not gospel for what a fragrance will actually smell like, I recently smelt a patchouli-focused niche that I unfortunately am not 100% sure of the name but it did definitely disprove that I dislike it all together. It was much more on the chocolate-y side, so thankfully I will not be put off by the note showing up in my research. I also definitely need to investigate about cypriol, as if "Promise (Parfum) | Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle" has it as a very powerful note, it is very likely what I don't like in the fragrance, and once I realised that patchouli was not the culprit, my next suspect was definitely oud as it seems to be another ingredient that has a mixed reception. Just wanted to say thank you for all the feedback and recommendations, I am really loving this community here on Parfumo! Yup I, too, love that you followed up with your experience @DylanBlueBoy! Oud is another tricky one, mainly because most mass produced fragrances don't actually use real oud but various synthetic substitutes which can vary from smelling of gasoline to smelling like burnt rubber to smelling fecal or urinous. Above all, have fun exploring!

... Seltzerpapi Anytime I see "aquatic" I usually run for cover. I think it's a byproduct of having come of age in the 80's when seemingly every guy's fragrance had an overdose of calone. Also, just on principle, calone annoys me because it sounds almost exactly like cologne and whoever decided to name it that was a buffoon. I'm going to add peony, freesia, and apple to my list. For some reason I associate those smells with inexpensive shampoos.

Why is that fragrance so popular?

Perfume Discussions
... @Shadows444 your post made me chuckle! I think there's some truth in what you say. Personally, I own bottles of perfume that cost me $12 and I have a few that cost me several hundred. For me, the decision to purchase is really just based on "do I like the way this smells?" But I'm not sure that's the case for everyone. I also wasn't wowed by "Lune Féline (Eau de Parfum) | Atelier des Ors". Based on reviews, I expected my first sniff to be transcendent. And it was nice but not nice enough to motivate me to buy a bottle.

... @Mohca I actually laughed out loud at your mom's comment! 🤣 @Ceesie it's funny, i love the oregano note and "Interlude Man | Amouage" is a favorite of mine! Though I prefer the subdued oregano note in "Interlude 53 | Amouage". @Lempi your description of "Baccarat Rouge 540 (Eau de Parfum) | Maison Francis Kurkdjian" made me giggle. It smells nothing like that to me! Though it's one of the fragrances that I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. I think it smells nice enough but it's not complex nor does it smell particularly interesting to me. @DRKSHDW the "your skin but better" fragrances tend to revolve around cetalox which I don't care for at all. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by "Me | Snif". It's soft, round, a bit fruity, and lasts forever. I also frequently get compliments on it when I wear it. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts should you ever try it.

... I've been inspired by @jasperdezoet's thread Brands that you just don't get? Personally, there aren't many brands I don't get but there are a few fragrances that are wildly popular and I don't understand why. Top of the list for me is "By the Fireplace | Maison Margiela". To me it just smells like a vanilla version one of those air fresheners that you plug into an electric outlet. I see so many people talk about how smoky it is and I get zero smoke. And try as I might, there's nothing I smell that makes me think, "Oh, this doesn't smell like smoke to me but I understand how it could smell like smoke to someone else." And since it only smells like fake vanilla to me, I find the price to be utterly staggering. So what fragrance is it for you? (I'm guessing there will be a lot of "Baccarat Rouge 540 (Eau de Parfum) | Maison Francis Kurkdjian" replies. 😆)

Searching for a mid 2000s men’s perfume based on notes

Perfumes by Note, Accord, Genre
... Welcome to Parfumo, @fallensys! It's kinda hard to definitively help with this because those notes appear in so many men's fragrances. The first thing that came to mind though is "Bleu de Chanel (Eau de Parfum) | Chanel" You could also try going to Directory > Fragrance Notes and entering the ones you listed above (one at a time) and then sort the search results by release year. Hope that helps!

Unsure if I like patchouli
Seltzerpapi
|
Perfumes by Note, Accord, Genre
... @DylanBlueBoy, patchouli is such a shapeshifter that I think it's hard to use a blanket "I dislike patchouli" approach. It can sometimes smell bright, green, and medicinal. It can sometimes smell dark, dank, and almost on the edge of rotting. Sometimes it smells of chocolate. Sometimes it smells of whiskey. I'm not sure where you live but if you're in the US you can order samples of different types of patchouli from Eden Botanicals for, like, $2 each. (BTW, each linked word takes you to a different type of patchouli on their site.) If you're not in the US, I'm sure there's something equivalent to Eden Botanicals in your shipping region. Being able to order individual oils/aroma chemicals has been a great way for me to fast-forward my knowledge of what I like/don't like, as well as of perfumery as a whole!

... "Oud Palao | Diptyque" which I love. "Southbank London | Kismet Olfactive" which is nice but not my favorite from Kismet Olfactive. Looking forward to testing it in colder weather and seeing if that shifts my opinion. "1963 | Fvith" which I love but it barely lasts or projects, unlike their other oils I own from FVITH. I emailed and asked if there was the possibility there was a production problem with the batch I received. I got no response but I did get a refund. So... there's that? "Khamrah Dukhan / خمرة | Lattafa" which I love. Though, to be fair, I'm not sure there's enough of a difference between the various iterations of Khamrah to justifiy owning them all (even though I do haha) "Balsamo della Mecca / Mecca Balsam | La Via del Profumo" is a masterpiece. Good grief it's so good. It's not for everyday for me. It's definitely a mood. But when I'm in that mood it hits so hard. and several perfume oils from Zomething Strange (which aren't in the database and maybe don't need to be?) with Swarm , Sanctum , Ceremony being my favorites so far. I like Swarm so much that I ordered four back-ups haha. I don't usually like gourmands and it's definitely gourmand but such a dark, deep vanilla mixed with tobacco that I love it.
