How do you all use your perfume decants and samples?

... Only a few of them are worth using up and even fewer are worth keeping. It also depends on the season and climate. Patience is your friend, but it doesn’t hurt to apply copious amounts of perfume before bedtime either. I take the easy way out with the rest of the samples I don’t use. Fragrantica has “traveling sample boxes” where people can sign up to get the box shipped to them. They get to put in and take out samples and then send them to the next person in line after them. I have one now, and I kid you not I only took ONE (1) sample and put in 70! But hey, at least I didn’t blind buy! Oh by the way! Depending on where you live and what the rules are for each organization, you can *possibly* donate unused or gently used samples to shelters.

Your Perfume Hot Takes

Perfume Discussions
... 1. Wearing perfume to attract others is ridiculous and makes no sense. 2. Men’s perfumes all smell the same to me. 3. No perfume should have a sillage of more than 2 ft. “Beast mode” perfumes should be UNTHINKABLE. 4. There’s this constant fighting over gourmands being too “childish” and aldehydes/vintages being too “old lady ish”. But at the end of the day, fresh baked goods and Old Hollywood glamor are both timeless pleasures! 5. Testing perfumes that are intentionally made to smell gross or disturbing isn’t worth it! After getting sick after a long day of sampling niche perfumes, I learned the hard way that I actually prefer my perfumes to smell nice!

... I’m curious to know which perfumes have the best names. Personally, I love the names of these perfumes: "The Voice of the Snake | Gucci" "Sirenis | Liquides Imaginaires" "The Decay of the Angel | Timothy Han Edition Perfumes" "Laughing with a Mouthful of Blood | Filigree & Shadow" "Sappho | Lush / Cosmetics To Go" "The Smell of Weather Turning (Perfume) | Lush / Cosmetics To Go" "Female Christ | 19-69" "American Psycho | 19-69"

What's the fragrance that got you into this hobby?

... Erin Parsons had a video on these supposedly “scandalous” perfumes that she bought and tested out: "Poudrextase | Marlou", "Carnicure / L'Animal Sauvage | Marlou", "Corpalium | Marlou". I loved the idea of perfume that didn’t smell pretty and palatable. It was so intriguing to me.

Things you never thought you'd start collecting

... I’m like, a chill collector, but I also get stuff as I go (including perfume samples!) I have a small dvd collection, a CD collection, a rock collection, a Red Sonja comic book collection, a small puzzle collection, and a couple Living Dead Dolls that I always wanted as a teen. I’ve also accidentally collected a lot of Catholic stuff (blessed figurine of the Pieta, “A prayer for the dying” card, a Mary figurine that used to be at my Grandma’s old house before she moved in with us). In a perfect world, I’d love to collect vinyls of my favorite albums to play through, but I don’t have a record player so it’s a fool’s errand right now. (I do have a Nina Hagen 45 and Ethel Cain’s Preacher’s Daughter in my possession, among others I rescued from when my family moved) I think 6 year old me would be shocked I’m not collecting Barbies and 13 year old me would be confused by the Catholic stuff. But hey, I’m here and they’re not!

... Lately I’ve been dabbing on either "Insolence (Eau de Toilette) | Guerlain", "Tragedy | Marissa Zappas", or "The Pink Bedroom | Marissa Zappas" before bed. But I also really like layering "Narciso (Eau de Parfum Rouge) | Narciso Rodriguez" with "Narciso (Eau de Parfum Poudrée) | Narciso Rodriguez"

... I’m with ursaw on this one. A nice apartment (maybe even a house?) would be amazing and 1000% worth the money. Using the money towards travel expenses would also a good idea in my opinion. Also, I feel like it’s much easier to justify spending hundreds of dollars on smelly water when you’re rich, so I’d go with that.

... Ursaw It's not the kind of scent that fits my vision of myself, but if a beautiful woman ever decides to lure me somewhere remote to ritualistically murder me, I hope she chooses to wear this one for the occasion. Beautifully put, @Ursaw

Perfume advice to suit your personality and style

Perfumes & Brands
... I’m not going to recommend you a perfume because I genuinely don’t know enough to suggest you something worthwhile. However, here are some questions to ask yourself to help you as you’re looking for The One ™: 1. Is it something that I could see myself wearing most of the time/everyday? 2. Does it go well with my current personal style? 3. Does it go well with my ideal personal style? 4. Would I still wear it even if others weren’t a fan of it? 5. Does the theme/story/concept behind it interest me? Why? 6. And most importantly… Do I LOVE it?

... "Female Christ | 19-69" has a good mix of those laundry detergent and musty basement smells that you’re looking for! "St. Louis Cemetery #1 | Alkemia" smells like a mildew-ridden basement of a mouldering historical building. It has a sort of synthetic-fresh scent too!

... I’m aspiring to the opposite! I would love to get to the point where I have a small capsule collection of perfumes that I absolutely love and would happily repurchase. A relatively small number of limited edition and discontinued scents would also have a place in my collection, but those would all be in mini and travel sizes. But I always hope that I will be sampling and keeping an open mind. Half the fun of the hobby is exploring, so I want to keep that going!

... Smirky There's no need to be bored, even if you don't want to spend a lot of money. Just get some samples from the sample stores, like www.scentsplit.com www.perfuum.com www.decantx.com www.scentdecant.com www. surrendertochance.com I agree. Now is the time to sample everything that piques your interest! (Within your budget, of course!)

... I’m Chase. I’m 27 years old and based in the United States. Growing up, I’ve always enjoyed art, makeup, costumes, and theater. Getting interested in perfume as a hobby just felt inevitable! I’m a goth at heart and my favorite perfumes always have a little edge to them. I’m also planning on going to grad school to get my Masters so I can be a librarian!
