Choking on powder
One of the few offerings from this house I truly dislike. As an iris lover, I was excited to try this, and powder notes do agree with me in some cases (like in Putain des Palaces or Iris Poudre). But Incarnata is a type of powder I cannot stomach. First of all, the orris. It is briefly present in its own right, earthy and alive, but then quickly gets subsumed into the lipstick accord. That accord is actually really nicely done. There is the waxiness of an orris that has shed the last remnants of soil from its skin. There is a subtle rosiness, aided by a touch of raspberry. And together they truly smell like vintage lipstick: rich, saturated, glamorous. But alas, this phase of Incarnata does not last. The waxiness disappears, the raspberry becomes amplified into globs of sticky jam, and everything that read like creamy lipstick at first now turns into suffocating face powder. I feel like I am being worked over by great fluffy puffs saturated with the stuff. Powder in such aggressive quantities, the complexion underneath it completely disappears. A very overt perfume, unflinchingly dedicated to its concept, but really not for me.

cosmetic bliss
this does have a resemblance with moulin rouge by histoires des parfums on my skin, sharing the same fruited orris, slightly rosy and cosmetic notes. i would say this opens with a more intense powdery note; where the histoires has a more plummy-cinnamon inflection, here the raspberry is more a facet of the orris on my skin that comes in and out with a sour note. incarnata also goes in a more soft suede-like direction as it wears, wrapping around a mildly spicy and dry-ambery note, as opposed to the histoires powdered muskiness. still both fairly close in their overall presentation to my nose though. still, i love this cosmetic powder-cosiness. do i need both? maybe.

cold cream & lipstick (wonderful)
Perfumes that smell like lipstick have a special appeal. For some they are nostalgic, for others they are a femme fetish. When combined, violet, iris root and rose replicate the swirl of freshly applied lipstick. Musks, vanilla, sweet woods and resins bridge the florals to the cold, powdery waxiness that defines lipstick’s olfactory ‘feel.’

A lipstick ‘note’ has been common to many perfumes since the early 2000s when new, less expensive iris materials came online, even sneaking its way into masculine and ‘unisex’ perfumes like Dior Homme and Histoire de Parfums 1889. Previously, lipstick scents had been the province of girly florals like Yves St. Laurent Paris and l’Artisan Parfumeurs Drole de Rose.

from scenthurdle.com

Incarnata follows in the line of a few other lipstick perfumes, namely ELDO Putain des Palaces, Frederic Malle Lipstick Rose and Chanel Misia, but it doesn’t copy them. Incarnata reaches past scent and finds the cold, creamy texture of lipstick. Compared to Incarnata, most ‘lipstick’ perfumes come off as basic variations on the mixed floral. Incarnata is lipsticky from stem to stern, even in the basenotes, by which point most lipstick fragrances struggle to maintain the freshly applied appearance that they had out of the bottle. Floral notes have been used to mask the scent of wax and cosmetic cream. They keep lipstick from smelling like crayons. Incarnata doesn’t mask anything. It smells like a complete vintage dressing table set with lipstick, face powder and cold cream.

The scent of lipstick brings to mind a particular range of color. Putain and Lipstick Rose land squarely in the pink/red spectrum. Even perfumes with a minor lipstick note, such as Guerlain Nahema and Chanel 18 tend to have traces of the same hues. Incarnata takes Chanel Misia’s grey-pink a step further with a cyanotic grey tone that implies a cool temperature as well as a cool palate. The papery iris topnote segues believably into the suede heart and waxy base and give Incarnata its frosty edge.

A friend’s grandmother had an endearing habit of touching up her lipstick as she’d head out the door. She’d flash us a girlishly conspiratorial look through the mirror as if she were tossing down a big sip of a martini and say, “Can’t face the world without lipstick now, can we?” She would have loved Incarnata.

Perfume de niche sublime.
Actually, I test and sneak around buying candidates for quite a while, but Incarnata didn't let go of me very quickly. This fragrance has a completely different effect. Of the Anatole Lebreton scents it is still the most pleasing in my perception, but in comparison to the Grand Public scents the scent needs time, as if it wanted to be conquered. The lipstick note is really very skilful, in addition there is a warm powderiness, which gets along completely without sweetness, but radiates a dry warmth. Anatole Lebreton dares a lot in his creations, when I tested this fragrance for the first time, a liquorice note bothered me so much that I washed off the perfume as well as possible. But it didn't want to, it stuck and it suddenly smelled - unliedly - like a bedroom in which things had been going really well shortly before, you stumble into an unventilated intimate nest and think only hoppala! More and more I like these fragrances, which not only smell good, but which at first can irritate, are unfamiliar, have a character that wants to be known (and loved). Fragrances that look like an own scent, Hautaccord, I read recently (if someone can recommend such fragrances to me, please!!). Despite my first violent reaction, I continued testing Incarnata. Thank God, because since today it's mine!

The waxiness is too much in this fragrance. I feel like I applied a crayola crayon on myself instead of a perfume.

Lipstick, finished with a light fruity sweetness, light floral and suede notes, an ambery and warm powderiness sprinkles over.

A waxy powdery feeling overall. I love the metallic iris under the smooth buttery lipstick smell.
