The US independent brand Apoteker Tepe was founded by Holladay Penick Saltz, who now works as a product designer and comes from the Jackson, Mississippi area.
The discovery of Diane Ackerman's book A Natural History of the Senses renewed Saltz's longstanding fascination with the sense of smell. After intensive studies in fragrance formulation and production at Le Labo Fragrances in New York City, she founded Apoteker Tepe in 2014.
Amidst technological advances, Apoteker Tepe deliberately focuses on craftsmanship, individual sourcing, and manual production. Inefficiency and variability are not considered flaws, but rather carriers of meaning. The focus here is not on a sophisticated marketing strategy, but simply on the pragmatic decision to emphasize the beauty of raw materials and remain true to one's own values.
From 2014 to 2018, Holladay managed the operational and creative fortunes of Apoteker Tepe before turning her attention to new projects. In 2022, Apoteker Tepe was acquired by Nicholas Nilsson, a dedicated fan of the brand, with the aim of reintroducing Apoteker Tepe fragrances to the market.
Nilsson, already known as a self-taught perfumer with his indie perfume brand Pineward, founded in 2020, worked closely with Holladay to revive the collection under his leadership.
