Black coffee? Better!

If you’re expecting the scent to smell like black coffee, you might be in for a surprise — the name is misleading. The good news is that it’s actually a gorgeous perfume. It blends a rich, deep balsamic rose with subtle hints of amber, all gently accented by coffee notes that linger in the background. The scent is smooth, cozy, and surprisingly long-lasting! I enjoy wearing it during the winter months. Overall, I’m seriously thinking about grabbing a full bottle since it’s really grown on me. It’s a lovely fragrance, and I appreciate that not many people are familiar with it, which makes it all the more special.

Ambery rose water topped off with vanilla extract

This is a lovely, sweet and cozy perfume.

At first spray, it's a sweetish rose—slightly heady and not at all powdery—with some amber and musk. It's rich, warm, floral and subtly sweet. Around the third hour, it's still ambery rose water but somewhat warmer like a tonka bean kind of warm spice. I assume this may have been the coffee, but I can't be certain because I unfortunately could not distinguish a specific coffee note when I wore this.

Something must be wrong with me because I can never smell the coffee when it's paired with a floral (like in this, New Haarlem, Arabican Rose, Coffee Break, or 1969). To my nose, it's very similar to Arabican Rose by Maison Tahite and Roses Vanille by Mancera, just a bit sweeter and without the fruitier aspects of either scent.

In the middle stages, the rose begins to fade a bit when the vanilla starts to emerge around hour five. The vanilla is soft, sweet and a little powdery, while the musk and amber hold strong and keep it smooth. By the end of the wear, you're left with a cozy, ambery, vanilla scent. The sillage was moderate to strong and the longevity was amazing—I could easily smell it on my skin over 12 hours after applying.

Overall, I really enjoyed this despite not being able to detect the coffee. It's a soft and beautiful wintery rose scent.

Mazzolari - Black Coffee to go?

Entering the fourth-generation traditional perfumery Mazzolari on Corso Monforte in Milan is like stepping into an olfactory paradise. However, one must first navigate a seemingly impenetrable labyrinth of rooms, stairs, and doors, which is definitely impossible without the professional help of the staff. There is hardly a square inch that isn’t filled with perfume or cosmetic products. If you can’t find a suitable scent here, then there’s no hope for you.
Well, that’s how I felt at first, completely overwhelmed by the magnificent selection. Just as I was heading towards the exit on the top floor, I stumbled upon a small shelf with packages resembling bound books, in which Mazzolari evidently offered its house brand. Good coffee is known to be found everywhere in Italy, and I confidently reached for the “Black Coffee.” After the first spray, I thought this was a Ristretto Intense Café dupe. The coffee-rose opening is quite similar to Montale, both in its intensity and with the vanilla adding a gourmand touch. This is described just as such on Mazzolari’s website, and I can only confirm it. Up to this point, Mazzolari is a twin scent to Montale. I must say at this point that I am definitely not a gourmand fan, but I find the combination of coffee, rose, and vanilla extraordinarily appealing. However, both scents begin to differentiate: Montale remains gourmand sweet and builds in its oily drydown solely on white musk. Mazzolari becomes more balsamic and loses some sweetness. When testing both scents side by side, the fruitier, ambered musk of Mazzolari becomes even more pronounced.
Conclusion: If you’re looking to purchase Montale again, you might find a very good alternative in Black Coffee, which is only slightly more expensive. The name Black Coffee is somewhat misleading, as it is rather creamy-sweet due to the vanilla and rose, and not primarily bitter and black. I would also categorize both scents as feminine; on a man, both would be too sweet for me. Which one I prefer, I cannot say, so it’s a Black Coffee to go.
