The base is buoyed by ambergris
Aoud Oman plays within the boundaries of established rose-oud convention, so its achievements lie in its nuances. I'm quite taken with its structural approach and darker take on rose.
This Sileno Cheloni creation opens with a dark, bitter, fruity rose that dominates the first hour of wear. It feels slightly Lutenesque (ala Fille de Berlin). The official note pyramid lists dates, and I can somewhat see what it's referring to in the dark fruitiness here, but this isn't a very sweet fragrance and there's none of the stickiness I tend to associate with dates in perfumery.
What I get more of in Aoud Oman is a smoky, warmth that emerges from the earthy, metallic Omani frankincense in the mid (which Cheloni showcased more directly in his frankincense soliflore, Bakhur), sitting alongside a soft tobacco accord.
The base is buoyed by ambergris, and is otherwise quite woody: earthy oud and patchouli with some creamy sandalwood to give everything a smooth finish.
Everything feels in right proportion without feeling fussy or overly ornamental. Very nice indeed.
