The Yoga Scent
I suppose I have always been a searching soul… being curious about life, death and everything in between. I have read up on quite a few religions and beliefs, tried to keep an open mind. Where I am right now in my life, meditation and yoga as an everyday practice is what makes most sense to me. But what perfume is appropriate for yoga classes? People stand so close to each other and become sweaty - what scent has the right sillage and notes to cheer you up and calm you at the same time? What scent will prevent you from smelling your neighbor yogi if the smell makes you feel uncomfortable? What scent will guide you through the three aspects of a successful yoga class: body, mind and breath?
Reading quite a few reviews on Bill Blass Amazing I was surprised that a fragrance can be perceived and experienced in so many ways and with so many outcomes. In one ring corner some state that it makes them want to throw up, due to some of the notes. In the other, some say it is one of the best scents ever made. And more or less everything in between. So everyone agrees not to agree, I suppose. I shall share my experience here.
I bought the fragrance because of the intriguing bottle design. My first impression was that it looked like a Chinese paper lamp. Delicate and fragile. It could also look like a modern skyscraper in a city like Tokyo or Singapore. An interesting mix between the past and the future. This is something I rarely see in a bottle. And it fits the scent so well.
At first spray I sense a calm, citric note and a really well behaved Lily of the Valley. I admit that usually Lily of the Valley can be dominant to my nose but the blend here is delicate. I sense the musk after 5 minutes and it adds a depth and warmth to the flowery-fresh experience, which is so well balanced. The good thing, if you like the scent, is that it is there when you wake up.
Back to yoga classes: to me, this scent is perfect.

"amazing" is also the similarity with Gloria Vanderbilt
At first glance, they are not twins or sisters, but rather like contemporaneous friends from the same character group. Cousins perhaps, or just very similar without being related. In character, powderiness, sillage, and longevity, these two are very much alike.
Where Amazing displays a fresh-sour-apple-floral-lily-of-the-valley note, Gloria Vanderbilt presents a raspberry-sweet-fruity scent.
From the heart note onward, both harmoniously sing the same song in a duet. Each with its own timbre sings softly and tenderly with the same intensity of dry powder warmth. This song continues, as it should. While Amazing always sounds a touch cooler, Vanderbilt sounds a bit sweeter, as the top note suggested. Clearly, the dry powder warmth dominates for both for a long time. And so similarly that only in direct comparison can one say which is which, during a right-left wrist test in equal amounts at the same time. Yesterday and the day before, I tested each fragrance individually. Had I not known, I could not have confidently said which was which, they appeared so similar to me.
Actually, one shouldn't be surprised. This is due to their almost simultaneous birth times. Perhaps perfumes have something like a "horoscope," considering their creation time, trends, and zeitgeist. This is also reflected in who likes such scents. Namely, mostly people who were between 20 and 30, in a phase of life filled with new beginnings, when the corresponding trend conquered the market.

You look a bit pale, Bill…
First, I would like to add a bit to the fragrance notes mentioned above:

Top notes: Mandarin, Peach
Heart notes: Tuberose, Water Lily, Lily of the Valley, Rose
Base notes: Mimosa, Sandalwood, Musk

In some descriptions, Hydrangea also appears. Water Lily is actually just the colloquial term for a specific type of Water Lily.

Although Amazing was launched in 1999, by the way the year Bill Blass retired and sold his company, the opening feels a bit old-fashioned. I am immediately reminded of my mother's perfumes from the 70s - a scent from another time. Is it due to the slightly alcoholic note that first strikes me? Whatever it is, I wouldn’t call it fruity.

After approximately ten minutes, this alcoholic-green impression fades, and a somewhat bitter, not at all sweet floral bouquet comes to the forefront. Since I associate Tuberose with attributes like strong, heavy, or intense, I find it hard to identify it in Amazing. I see the delicate, fresh Lily of the Valley passing by with a lightly fragrant, not yet fully opened white rose at the roadside. Soon after, I perceive nothing at all. Why are you so pale, Bill? You could have put a bit more strength into your fragrance. Or did you only showcase all your qualities in the EdP and leave the EdT, which I have here, behind?

What is certain is that Amazing, despite its surprisingly strong appearance, soon transforms into a subtle floral-musk scent that leaves only a hint of itself. It's a pity really, because after the initial shock, I was just starting to warm up to it. I would even describe this perfume as unconventional if the individual scent sequences lasted longer.

By the way, the licensee for the Bill Blass fragrance label is now the company First American Brands. The designer passed away in 2002 and could only enjoy his retirement for a short time. Amazing is offered quite cheaply in the USA, and it’s worth comparing prices.

This one is really good. I can't detect lily of the valley in the opening, more like a light mandarin, then surprisingly spicy flowers come in,

I like lily of the valley, it's beautifully powdery-floral. Unfortunately, the longevity is weak. But otherwise, it's pretty close to stunning for me.

Quietly, fresh flowers peek around the corner, startled by something sour coming their way. They quickly disappear again.

Delicate powdery lily of the valley + a tangy rose (not listed as DN); neither are my favorite flowers. They drift away on musk.

A blend of floral, fruity, tangy, and creamy. Does it work? Really well, actually. Never smelled anything like it before, I'm truly impressed!*

sour powderiness...
Lily of the valley is coming through, but unfortunately, it's all overshadowed by this sour note...
Sadly, a flop.

Lily of the valley and fresh light green apple peels lie in the overflowing powder puff full of powder. Achoo hi-hi, and smile!
