Perfect American floral
I inherited a perfectly preserved original Prestige Fragrances version. Bill Blass was very progressive for 1978. The competition was Halston, Oscar, Lauren, Opium, First and Calvin Klein(red). The powerhouse era was yet to evolve. Bill Blass blatantly paved the way for the powerhouse. This was the era of the "American school" of perfume.

It is a major floral chypre that has plenty of green notes. The floral notes are enormous and lively. Today it seems all too familiar. It was copied many times since. Estee Lauder Beautiful comes to mind as does Sung.

I get plenty of mimosa and hyacinth that lifts your spirits. The rest of the composition blends perfectly into clever bouquet. Galbanum clearly dominate the first 20 minutes paving the way for the oakmoss vetiver and patchouli. It is the brightest chypre I have ever encountered.

There is no musky civet or any other dirt notes to drag it down. It shines like the top of the Chrysler Building! Its a very New York City perfume.

My box states the suggested retail price is $15.

American Frenchman
I was looking for fragrances at the Sunday flea market, only spotting harmless, banal mass-appeal everyday scents and was about to turn my attention to other offered items out of slight boredom when I heard someone speaking English in the midst of it all, and my gaze fell upon a black lady who was just about to clear away a big bottle (about 75 ml) of perfume that was about to disappear into a basket with her companion. I approached her: "What's that for a fragrance?" She replied: "Oh, that's an American label, you want to see and test it?" And she held the bottle out to me; I took it and looked at it. "Bill Blass" was written on it. Just "Bill Blass." I tested it cautiously and detected a good scent. Not too loud and not too sweet. "Four euros," the lady said, and I immediately grabbed it. Later, I tested "Bill Blass" more thoroughly, and I must say that the Eau de Parfum was on par with good French fragrances. A green-grassy-fruity-floral opening with vintage hints, later a slightly powdery, bitter floral bouquet, very pleasant in odor, reminiscent of "Quelques Fleurs" by Houbigant, and then a Chypre emerges at the back, sprinkled with earthy and woody ingredients, allowing rich green moss to take off, which has a lot to offer. Tinty, slightly bitter and woody... an unexpected surprise that, along with the other fragrance notes, lasts a long time. Made in America, "Bill Blass" smells suspiciously "French" and had the potential to be a classic. Unfortunately, production was halted too early...

This Billie is not pale
.. but has quite a bit of wood in the cabin. I applied it today around 9:00 AM and it's still there. The rapid Billie doesn't hold back at the opening. No skimping here, it's all out. The fruity notes are practically flying around my ears. So, if this Billie is pale, then I am the Virgin Mary!!!!
Flower bomb in the middle. Although there's a lot of iris in it, even orris root, it doesn't turn iris-like. It transitions into a rather heavy note and I was already afraid that the tuberose would choke me. But it doesn't, it stays well-behaved, yet noticeable.
After hours, the green-spicy chypre emerges. I was quite surprised because I hadn't read the pyramid above (I swear!!) and the chypre didn't reveal itself at the outset, as many classics do. The base is woody, spicy, and a bit dusty.
I find it beautiful, but a little confusing. It bursts in with fruit and flowers and then goes all oak moss!

Fruity-floral chypre with lots of green and oak moss, simply exquisite. It must have been quite bold back in the day.. Still lovely now, but more delicate.

Very floral, fruity, green. Exciting progression. Later citrusy, bright, slightly soapy, but not scratchy. Very beautiful chypre. Elegant, feminine.
