Solid and multifaceted spice, this time without a hat
Indeed, the headgear that his "ancestor," the "Borsalino" from 1984, wore so naturally is missing here; "Panama" goes hatless through life; he is younger, a bit cheekier and more cosmopolitan, but in shedding his hat, he has also lost some character.

While the "Borsalino" was a typical, albeit rather subtle representative of the 80s powerhouses, "Panama" follows the spirit of the times quite closely. By the time it was released, there were already several competitors in this category, namely those men’s fragrances that were both discreet and yet distinctive, spicy without relying on animalistic notes.

One might regret this concession to the prevailing trend. As a rigorous old-schooler, I only do so with reservations. In 2007, one could not expect a sensational blockbuster; at that time, there were many other fragrances that were far more inconsequential and interchangeable.

"Panama" should not hurt anyone, as it is too pleasing and well-crafted. However, it is also unlikely to knock anyone off their feet, as it lacks that certain something, a distinguishing feature, yes - character.

All in all, by no means a bad fragrance, with a nice spice, and also relatively unsynthetic. I would have liked more of the orange in the top note; the further development is - as mentioned - competent, but rather unexciting, with a quality bottle featuring a spray head that allows for very fine dosing.

So, a universally usable spicy fragrance. Why not? There are worse things. Priced in the mid-range (I paid just over EUR 20 for 50 ml).

Panama Hat
Well, until recently there was a long and worthwhile comment on this fragrance here. The user probably logged out and took their comments with them (= deleted them), which I find unfortunate. It was actually through that comment that I became aware of the fragrance.

Borsalino is known for its headgear; particularly the famous Panama hat can, if it is a "real" one, only be a Borsalino. I don't understand why a hat fashion company needs a perfume line. However, under this name, they also sell glasses, shoes, cufflinks, or earrings (both sensibly in the shape of a hat, which I find cool).
The various perfumeries in Stuttgart partially knew about Panama, but did not have it. In the relevant online perfumeries, Panama (sometimes as a special offer) seems to still be available.

I could now try to come up with a short story in which Panama hats or the scent of Panama hats (not the one from the sweatband!!) play the main role. But for short stories, I have lost my poetic flair.

The opening of Panama is impressive. The overture consists of bergamot, orange, and indeed the flesh of the orange, along with something foreign to me, presumably the indicated basil. However, the basil leaves in the pot on the windowsill smell different.
Shortly after that, it transitions into a fresh powderiness. It smells nice but unspectacular.

Does the world need this fragrance? Not really. On one hand, there are many fragrances that smell similar or alike. On the other hand, you can't go wrong with this scent; you can wear it at the office and in your leisure time. Considering the price, the price-performance ratio is very good, and therefore Panama receives an unreserved "Recommended." However, in my opinion, the (fragrance) world will not be worse off if it disappears from the shelves for good.

Solid and suitable for everyday use. Surprisingly deep scent with a fresh-citrusy opening, wonderfully spicy heart, and a warm finish.
