Great Chypre - very small ;-D
Why? Well, Charrier has been producing gift sets of miniatures for many decades now. Recently, I received one of these miniatures from a dear friend and I am constantly tempted to casually purchase a set (I remember them from my childhood, oh yes, it practically calls for a "nostalgia purchase") - so far, however, I have held back.
But even though the bottles are so small, there is a lot of greatness inside, and in this case, a big Chypre!!
Since there is currently no comment on “Folie de Femme,” I would like to change that and simultaneously take the opportunity to draw everyone's attention to these beautiful gift sets and recommend taking a look at the site. I like that sort of thing, and maybe some of you do too.
But now to this fragrance:
“Folie de Femme” personally reminds me a lot of “Wiener Bouquet,” because it is clearly a floral chypre. The opening is very dominated by apricot and is sweet, but very pleasantly sweet... not that “synthetic headache-sweet” that I so despise, and even if vanilla is supposed to provide a slight sweetness in the base - that’s fine, because it doesn’t dominate. No artificial vanilla crescent cookie baking aroma sweetness, but at most to soften the wood a bit. The apricot only slowly loses its strength, primarily strong but not overwhelming flowers, with the gardenia outshining all others, but jasmine and tuberose are still actively competing. If ylang-ylang is indeed included - I’ll just believe that for now - then the fragrance doesn’t really assert itself for me. Ylang-ylang is not really present in this mixture for my nose, well... moving on.
Alongside primarily gardenia and tuberose/jasmine, once the apricot has finally said goodbye, one can really speak of a very strong floral-woody chypre. The sandalwood is present from the start and now pushes even more to the forefront, while patchouli is so subtly incorporated that you really have to sniff closely. So for those who like chypre, not too patchouli-heavy - here patch has been used cautiously, Bravo!!
The longevity is quite decent. I have been wearing it for several hours now and it is absolutely present - just as it should be.
Since it is a splash bottle, you dose differently with dabbing. I suspect that if I were to spray it generously, as is usually my style, it would quickly become too much with the sillage, but this way it should be bearable for the environment. All in all, once again a fragrance “from long ago” which I love (if the giver didn’t know that ;-D).
Conclusion: floral-(sandal-)woody with just a hint of sweetness - that’s how a chypre should be for me.
