I have no idea how the creation process of the fragrances at Chiseled Face works and whether Ronald Wiebe, the owner of this charming company specialized in shaving supplies, is the "nose" behind it. Some creations are so powerful, quirky, and unrefined that they could also be the result of random outcomes based on intuitive combinations of selected good ingredients. The aftershaves and EdPs of this brand seem to be predominantly brewed from natural ingredients. According to the homepage, they talk about "Essential Oils and Natural Fragrances." That could be true; I don't perceive any synthetics at all.
In the end, this doesn't necessarily have to be a quality criterion. But the result is convincing: Everything I have been able to test from CF so far is well-crafted and wears very pleasantly. This also applies to Vert Noir (AS): The unusual component "sea buckthorn" piqued my curiosity here. In combination with bergamot and incense, it creates a scent that reminds one of the citrusy-smoky English tea classic, which in turn was named after Earl Grey... probably after this had an influence on the trade policies of the East India Company.
I digress, back to the fragrance: Probably due to jasmine, it gains an exciting and slightly smoky touch, which soon recedes into the background. What remains is a very appealing black tea note.
Since all aftershaves from this house contain menthol for functional purposes, it also provides a lasting freshness kick that nicely supports the top note (bergamot) here.
Whether this also applies to the possibly associated EdP cannot be easily determined from here: For some complicated-sounding regulatory or transport-related reasons, CF unfortunately does not currently deliver EdPs to the EU and even excludes these products for us Europeans.
I hope this doesn't stay that way. I would really like to have Vert Noir in a more intense version for spraying. That would then be a straightforward companion for almost all occasions.
