First impressions of Jupiter's moon Io
Blessedly amazed, Dr. Heywood Floyd steered his neo-Victorian lander over the brownish red shimmering surface of Jupiter's third moon. Shouldn't the surface and atmosphere actually be yellow with sulfur and sulfur oxide? Pictures taken by Voyager as well as assumptions of the scientists had obviously not been correct. Colossal calderas, endless long lava rivers, few gigantic mountains, these were the things that were true, but the colours ?
Immediately after landing, Dr. Floyd activated the scent spectrometer on his helmet and got off the ferry. His footsteps were soft, it smelled of smoke, steamy earth and hazy peat. Also the smoke did not smell of sulphur, rather of a distant fire, crackling conifer needles, far behind high hills of damp leaves.
Floyd lingered by a dark brown river of shimmering amber. No, the viscosity of the lava was not as low as expected, the flows were slow-motion, smelling of dark resins, earthy and woody, warm and spicy. Here Heywood paused, six to seven hours dreaming of the peatlands of the earth, the steaming dark forests, until Jupiter rose in the sky, majestic, powerful, reassuringly humming.
