The man without qualities
...is a famous novel by Robert Musil, which he never finished It describes the existence of a man who seems so utterly uncharacteristically pale. A sterile, unimpressive life, without ups and downs...

Somehow this title always makes me think of this fragrance, a fragrance that is perverse in a way, although it is without question a work of art. It looks so clatteringly cold and metallically repellent, as no other fragrance has ever managed to appear to me. This fragrance, connects with no one, it always hovers next to the wearer and refers its surroundings to this: Keep your distance please! Maybe a good scent for the momentary crisis, no one comes too close here, it smells like sterilum itself. Mint and rhodinol give an unbelievably ethereal, minty-medicinal impression that etches away the nose rabbit. To call him "fresh" would almost be too nice. It is rather sterile to the last. A purity, like after cleaning a bath with all imaginable means. Geranium and light spice then bring a slight green shimmer into it, which, I want to emphasize, also has a rather synthetic green effect. Consequently, a repellent scent wall is created, which lets the wearer become lonely
--> The comparison to a sterile dentist's treatment room is more than appropriate!

Then why a 7?
Yeah, he's just too artistically special to be swept away completely. Those who like this ethereal-medical freshness and who can't get the sharpness of the geranium will surely love it. However, no one should ever buy it blind in life. Hardly any fragrance - except Interlude - managed to give me an immediate headache. This one did! It is extremely pungent and biting and thus ultimately demanding. Durability and Sillage are also LESS OK, so I had to suffer a little longer today.

This fragrance is ergo the symbol of featurelessness. There is no more life here, everything is clean, sterile and pure to the core. If that gentleman with geraniums stands at the door of his beloved, she will not find anything to tell her about him. There is not a wrinkle in his shirt, no crooked hair, and no twisted face to be seen. There is nothing here and there was never anything here, this person does not seek love, but distance. She will recognize it and reject him and throw herself into the warm, open arms of a living person.

I'm curious what you think about him I am shocked, fascinated, disgusted by this "unpleasant smell" and now I am even more afraid of the dentist...

Fresh, fresh, fresh!
This is a very clever fragrance... masterfully composed. The perfumers here wanted to recreate the classic masculine smell or "fougère" smell (ie a Lavender, Oakmoss, Coumarin combination used in most "green" or "traditional" fragrances for men). They used inspiration from men's soaps from the 1920's which used Geranium and cloves in order to convey "freshness" and an overall "clean & masculine" smell. The result here is quite remarkable.

Basically the perfumer Dominique Ropion has taken Geranium oil in it's purest form, and built a composition around it. Geranium can be sometimes minty, sometimes lemon-fresh, sometimes like cloves, or sometimes like rose. Here he has added notes which "pump-up" these different aspects of Geranium, such as mint absolute, cinnamon extracted using modern technology to bring out the "fresh" and "aromatic" aspects, and he has layered it on a base of clean sandalwood and very clean white musk.

It smells so incredibly fresh! I have rarely encountered a fragrance which is able to convey freshness as much as this does. I think this is because it has a huge mint note. But I must stress, this does not smell like toothpaste! It has star anise, cloves, cinnamon, and very green mint and geranium, with a smooth base of creamy sandalwood and polished white musk. Like fresh cotton sheets just washed.

It's actually not an easy smell to understand at first (like many of the Frédéric Malle creations). But I think if you want to convey a message of "fresh and serious" you could wear this. I also think it's floral enough to be worn by a woman (despite the name). This is one to try (especially for this price) for anyone who loves green nature and "fresh" smells. As with all Frédéric Malle's... the quality is exceptionally high and the projection is good. One to try for summer and all year round. Green, aromatic, minty and floral fresh!

Minty Geranium
I certainly was not expecting the bright minty opening of Frédéric Malle GERANIUM POUR MONSIEUR! Wow, it almost seems as though it's going to be mint cologne! But no, the geranium pretty much takes over after only a couple of minutes, although there is a lingering mint presence all the way to the drydown.

My next surprise is that this composition has been designated for men. Why? I ask most sincerely. I've seen comments on Demeter VINTAGE NATURALS GERANIUM to the effect that it is a masculine fragrance, so perhaps some people think of geranium as masculine? Well, I don't, and to me this perfume is absolutely unisex.

Is it my favorite rose geranium scent in the universe? No, I'm afraid not. This will probably be regarded as heresy--and I do love Dominique Ropion, I really do!--but I think that I prefer the Demeter with its patchouli and lavender rather than this minty geranium.

Innovative Listerine Mint And Geranium Make A Weird Combination...
The opening to Geranium is a bit off-putting. A bracing mint smells similar to a medicinal minty mouthwash like Listerine. The geranium then enters and mingles with the odd clinical mint to create an even more odd smell. In this case I would not say that "odd" means "bad," but it really is not something I would personally want to smell like. About an hour or so into the scent's development things get much more pleasant... The mint recedes and the geranium mixes with some very nice spices of clove and cinnamon, finishing with a base of musk and incense that has a glancing resemblance to Ropion's later (and far superior) release "Portrait of a Lady". The whole thing is a relatively brief affair, with longevity only lasting around 5-6 hours on my skin (with my average being 8 or more). Projection is average on the scent, and is primarily focused on the opening notes (which are the worst part of Geranium, IMO). In the end, Geranium pour Monsieur is definitely an innovative creation, but it is not one I want to wear and cannot recommend. I suggest trying Ropion's aforementioned Portrait of a Lady, where he perfected the Geranium pour Monsieur base and is his true masterpiece. 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5.

Marvis Licorice Toothpaste

10/10

This is an easy 10/10, there is something so unique about this scent, it's so incredibly comforting and uplifting at the same time. Something about smelling this, it's like any anxiety just fades away as you smell this in the air. And yes, Musc Ravageur is great, Portrait of a Lady is great...but to me there is no single better fragrance from Feredic Malle than this. Nothing from any other house has ever given me such a calming feel.

Frederic Malle wanted this to smell like the mouthwash his father used everyday, L’Eau de Botot which was originally created for the French King Louis XV. If you think of perfumery as an art -- that's certainly a challenge to make something thats appealing to wear as a fragrance that reminds you of mouthwash, but mission accomplished.

When this gets compared to toothpaste, it's not far off, it certainly has that vibe to it, but it has a licorice aspect to it, I would equate that to Marvis licorice flavored toothpaste.

I've worn this several times in the past few days and I have to say that I am in love with this now...I wasn't sure at first because it really is a toothpaste vibe, but it has really strong performance and projection and I get whiffs of this all day and it's great. The minty toothpaste aspect of this has a nice cooling effect, it's great for warm weather.

The geranium is a beautiful fragrant flower with its minty, spicy and most of all green aromatic tones. It got skillfully butchered here

The vintage is so unique and bottle worthy...the new reformulation is sometimes smelling like a DDT and has poor longevity

Discussions about Geranium pour Monsieur

I have just added "Acqua di Carthusia Geranio" by Carthusia to my collection. It's all about geranium with some citrus and spice. Worth sampling for geranium...
