Elegant condescension
This perfume is a surprise for me. I'm not usually fond of aquatic scents or lilies. I only tried Lys Méditerranée because a perfumery had discontinued the entire Edition de Parfums and offered the remaining stocks at a greatly reduced price. And so I experienced this green, fresh note of lily-of-the-valley, with a bit of spiciness from ginger, and immediately afterwards a very natural-looking lily, with all its density, but still fresh - salicylates are certainly involved here. The whole thing is underlaid with a gentle earthiness and pond shore water, which is pleasantly different from the usual calone bombs. The marketing speaks quite clichédly of a salty sea breeze, but fortunately I don't feel the scent at all as clichéd or sea-orientated. Something salty, only perceptible from afar, instead reminds me of the scent of washed skin with a hint of fresh sweat. Very clean, but still physical. By the way, the composition does not make a Mediterranean impression on me at all.

The fascination of the fragrance arises from the union of opposites - airy lightness, white-flowered heaviness and cool green freshness. That's why I believe that it can probably be worn at any time of year - I've only known it for a short time, so I can only make a guess: You will always find a connection to the season and a refreshing or warming contrast to it. The whole thing is elegant enough for official occasions, even in the evening, especially on summer evenings, and unobtrusive enough for the office. The sillage is moderate, the projection a bit stronger and the life span long (over 8 hours, on clothes even days). After the appearance of the lily, the scent remains fairly linear, slowly withdrawing further and further onto the skin. One smells very beautiful, at a short distance very distinct, at a longer distance somewhat indeterminate. Overall, Lys Méditerranée appears melancholic, cool and distant. As far as it's possible to be patronized by a perfume, this is what happens here.

Lys Méditerranée is easily wearable by men, the energy of the green notes and the seriousness of the lily scent give it a universal appeal. Besides, this fragrance is not sweet. There are neither the warm and sweet spices nor the vanilla hammers that make some other lily scents so much more feminine (and for me so unbearable). But what you have to say is that Lys Méditerranée is recognizably rooted in its time. Historically, it seems like a bridge from the aquatic scents of the 1990s to the wave of fresh, clean scents that emerged at the turn of the millennium. Both were trends that I never liked. So I am all the more surprised now.

My Reference Lily Fragrance...
Lys Mediterranee opens with a brief oceanic mist before a very subtle angelica makes an appearance. The angelica hangs around in the background, just barely perceptible when a gorgeous lily of the valley note emerges and remains through the heart, soon coupling with a co-starring water lily to give a nice presentation of lilies right after a spring rain. Joining the angelica in its supporting role is a very faint orange blossom. The base is a light clean musk that melds with the lily but never calls attention to itself staying true to the linear and subtle nature of the scent. Projection is above average and longevity is excellent.

Lys Mediterranee is a beautiful composition that lily of the valley and lily fans in general should really appreciate. The angelica is so subtle that at first I did not detect it, instead focusing on the lily of the valley, but on my second wearing I not only noticed it, but can now really appreciate the skill in how Flechier uses it to support the muguet. On the whole Lys Mediterranee does not change much once you get past the brief oceanic stage at the top, but it is probably the best lily focused composition I have smelled to date. From a guy's perspective I probably would prefer smelling this on a lady than wearing it myself, but wearable and wonderful it certainly is. Lys Mediterranee is another strong release from the house of Frederic Malle and earns an excellent 4 stars out of 5.

A greenhouse...
Sadly I do not know flowers as much as I would like to, therefore I can really not “judge” the quality of the notes here – lily and muguet, or more in general this perfume as a whole from the point of view of its objective quality. What I can say though is that it opens with a breathtakingly vibrant and realistic feel which threw me right into a greenhouse: the smell not only of petals and leaves but also soil, stagnant water, dust, freshly-cut branches, humidity, and an almost perceivable and really fascinating rendition of that peculiar feel of “humid warmth” there’s often in greenhouses and florist shops – almost stale, opalescent, suspended. All of this with a fresher, brighter, zesty citrus-floral breeze coming from outside, to bring in also a more radiant “outdoor” feel (I guess the “Mediterranée” part of the concept). This perfume seems so simple, yet so deep and complex, carrying a powerful and romantic feel of nostalgia, slightly gloomy too, at the same time lively and relaxed – almost sleepy. It smells apparently clean and elegantly understated, but if you “listen” to it carefully, it has a lot of images and stories to narrate, with some unpredictable darker shades (the dust, the soil, the archaic rawness, the dreamy feel of warmth). As I was saying, I don’t know if the materials are objectively good here (they definitely seem to me though), but all of this I noted above is more than enough for me to consider Lys Mediterranée a fantastic, deep, sincere scent, absolutely worthy a sniff for any fan of flowers (and of perfumes in general, actually).

Fresh and pristine
For the record, this is primarily lily of the valley, despite the note not being listed in the scent pyramid.

Lys Mediterranee is very floral and crisp. This fragrance makes me think of Summer and lush vegetation. The aquatic aspect is certainly present, however it is not entirely oceanic, meaning I'm not picking up on any salt water accords, or anything beach related. It's more so the scent of dewy white florals after a heavy downpour of rain.

The scent itself reminds me of a florist's shop. The lily of the valley is very strong, followed by notes of orange blossom and jasmine. The overall blend is very green and pristine.

Lys Mediterranee is quite a cold and somewhat icy fragrance. It's very clean but also very natural, like something you'd easily picture yourself smelling in garden-like surroundings. I am really enjoying smelling this fragrance as I find it quite intriguing. I actually much prefer this fragrance over Carnal Flower due to its watery-like freshness.

It's a relatively light and airy scent, also quite linear, but that is in no way a negative aspect, as the blend itself is one I can honestly describe as very moving and beautiful. On the skin, it tends to become quite subtle, almost transforming itself into a very soothing skin scent.

The longevity is rather persistent, holding on my skin for nearly the whole day. I must say that this is one of the nicest interpretations of lily of the valley, perhaps even exceeding Diorissimo in terms of being more natural and more skilfully executed.

The Antithesis of Poison
I am confused about whether the "lys" in Frédéric Malle LYS MEDITERRANEE is supposed to be lily or lily of the valley. And is ginger lily a flower or do we have ginger and lily or LOTV here? In any case, to my nose, this perfume opens with a burst of bright orange blossom before an aromatic quality of mingling ginger and angelica sweep in to create a unisex out of what seemed as though it was going to be a feminine floral perfume!

I am reminded in wearing LYS MEDITERRANEE of the opening of Bond no 9 NEW YORK FLING, which is erroneously marketed to women when in fact it is a completely unisex and barely floral aromatic perfume featuring ginger as the focal note. The ginger in LYS MEDITERRANEE is not quite as marked as in NEW YORK FLING, but it still is enough to make this seem far less floral than I had been expecting.

Yes, mediterranean seem apt here: fresh and breezy, this is an easy fragrance to wear. Pretty much the antithesis of POISON, amazingly created by the very same perfumer: Edouard Fléchier. Now that's what I call versatility!

Very realistic opening of lilies, fresh, indolic and somewhat aquatic. But it ends in a huge wave of generic white musks. Disappointed.
