This was not marketed correctly, in my opinion.
This could be marketed by a nouveau niche company as a unisex, gourmand, tobbaco scent, though it's natural smelling, which seems to be something much of today's niche is moving away from (so perhaps niche of a decade ago). It has little to do with the original Royal Secret (I have only tried vintage EdC of that one - it's an "old school" oriental that some describe as having things like a cat urine note, which I can understand but chalk it up to an "undeveloped nose" not understanding what he/she is smelling). On the plus side, I was able to get a new, 100 ml bottle of EdRS for about $4, and this sort of thing has happened before. I guess most people aren't going to do as much research as I am and they tend to get caught up with "hype fragrances." But if you see this one around to be tested and you like gourmand/tobacco scents, I think you will want to sample it!

Hit and run? No. It's Hit and stay.
And I am not kidding. It hits you from the start with lots of pink pepper. Enough to stop you on the track and make you lose the olfactory sense. If that was not enough, here comes the Indonesian patchouli, harsh and remorseless.
The flowery and fruity notes are barely noticeable.
After an hour the darkeness sets in with frankincense and amber.
The colour of this composition is dark brown with glimpses of dark orange.
Long lastig and with good sillage if you handle the bottle nozzle with care, otherwise you risk to have a void around you. It is not a "come closer" perfume. It is more a "stay away".
Maybe that is the secret of the " royal distance".
For me it is a strange scent and I promise to learn how much to apply and I will be back with news.

Musty Reformulation
Unfortunately, this fragrance is no longer distributed by the company Monteil, but by the US brand "Five Star Fragrances". "Five Star Fragrances" are very rigorous reformulators and formula diluters. From the former fantastic "Royal Secret", only the name remains. What I smell in the current version is much cheaper lavender in the top note (with slightly menthol cigarette reminiscent overtones) on a conventional amber-civet-patchouli base that smells musty and outdated. A bit like "Tabu" by Dana, just not quite as heavy. The concentration here is a "Cologne Intensive", the scent fades after about 30 minutes - and one is relieved.
