Souvenirs, Souvenirs...
Yes, the good Bill Ramsey had a hit with this in Germany in 1959, and if I can believe the information from the GDR Perfume Museum, then the fragrance existed as early as 1957, but when exactly it first saw the light of day is uncertain.
Florena, which is nowadays better known for its cream, used to have several fragrances on the GDR market, and I think the bottles were quite appealing.
Socialism didn’t smell too bad at all; when I smell on my arm, there was certainly worse in both the West and the East to scent oneself with.
As always, it is exciting to comment on a vintage fragrance without a pyramid, and I hope that my scent impressions are not completely off.
As expected, the top note is no longer as fresh as it must have been years ago, but the fragrance has not gone bad. The top note probably had a bit more citrus freshness, of which I can only faintly sense a hint now. The first minutes therefore come across as somewhat stern, soapy, paired with a subtly bitter note.
When the sternness of the top note fades, Souvenir develops into a nice, not too intense floral perfume made from rather light, classic blooms. The potpourri develops a restrained sweetness and, as I find, a certain powderiness.
In the base, this powderiness becomes a bit more pronounced, and a woody-spicy note joins in. I couldn’t discern any more changes even on the third test.
Souvenir is certainly not a refined or even great perfume, and it probably wasn’t back then either. Although the fragrances are not comparable, I draw a small parallel to the Western Tosca, which is also a solid scent for a not-so-large budget.
Comparable to Tosca are also longevity and intensity, so slightly better than average.
I think that Souvenir would have a very hard time in today’s fragrance market, as the perfume clearly shows its time of origin and lacks the recognizability, or rather, that certain something to be considered a classic.
Nevertheless, I am glad that I could test this vintage fragrance and thus get a small scent impression of a long-gone era.
Hasi, thank you very much for the fragrant history lesson.
