Linden Test 1 - Dreams from the East
I walked past many a tree
In the play of the morning winds,
I swayed into a waking dream
And did not see how the blind man.
But suddenly I awoke in the dream
And cried: "Oh God, how gentle!"
I found myself under the linden tree,
It breathed fragrance in the wind.
But I said: "You sweet tree,
The blind man greets you too,
Who has never heard your name
Even in a dream, as linden."
(Friedrich Hebbel)

Not without reason is the linden so often sung and poetized. Lovers, lonely and in pairs, have spent many an hour under a linden, delighting in the scent of its blossoms. The warm wind gently plays in the branches of the lindens. Like a soft, tender breath from paradise, the aromas of the linden blossom enchant with their honeyed sweetness. The fragrance is not present, it literally floats and is carried into our senses with every breath of air. Just when you catch its magic, it vanishes again.
I have decided to test all three linden perfumes named "Unter den Linden" in comparison, starting with the oldest specimen from VEB-Florena (Extrait) or Berlin Cosmetics (Eau de Toilette).
~
The perfumer has skillfully taken on the theme, as "Unter den Linden" embodies exactly this image.
The sweet floral opening is only strongly present for a brief moment. Then a creamy veil lays over the skin, which is a revelation for the linden lover. With full suppleness, the enchantingly natural sweetness of blooming lindens reveals itself. This sweetness is light and buoyant; nothing bites here, nothing sticks, and it truly reminds nothing of cotton candy or dental filling.
The fragrance remains close to the skin but is produced into the immediate environment of the wearer with every movement. An avenue of blooming lindens in the warm wind....
~
Conclusion:
Unter den Linden is a soliflore that does not come across as boring, even though the fragrance progression brings no changes. Personally, I find it very authentic and would attribute a certain elegance to it despite its romantic traits. The extrait naturally boasts a stronger presence but also a touch more sweetness than the EdT. However, when combined, the two complement each other perfectly!
The longevity leaves nothing to be desired, as sprayed (or dabbed) in the evening, I can still smell it subtly and skin-close the next morning....
A truly recommendable fragrance for all linden lovers and those who do not yet know they belong.
Unfortunately, this fragrance is now very hard to find, as production has been discontinued. What a shame!
By the way, I suspect that this fragrance is dedicated to the city of Berlin, as "Unter den Linden" lies between Brandenburg Gate and Schlossplatz. (It belonged to the eastern part of Berlin) It is said that in June, during the bloom, it simply smells heavenly there.....
So, off to Berlin!

Informative:
"Unter den Linden" is a fragrance from the former GDR and was distributed by the following manufacturers:
Berlin Cosmetics
VEB - chemical works Miltitz - Florena Waldheim
~
Already centuries ago, perfume was produced by the company Schimmel in Miltitz near Leipzig. During GDR times, the company was expropriated and transformed into a cosmetics combine.
In the early 90s, the old tradition was picked up at the new location in the Chemiepark Bitterfeld-Wolfen. With the founding of the company in the 90s, the name "Miltitz Aromatics" was used not without reason.
However, the company no longer produces fragrances itself but supplies renowned perfume houses with fragrance materials:
In more than 26 countries worldwide, including the USA and Canada, as well as Southeast Asia and North America, the scent materials are exported. Whether it’s perfume from Dior, Gucci, Joop, or Jil Sander, almost every bottle contains fragrance materials from the VEB company from Bitterfeld-Wolfen. For example, they are the only manufacturer of the excellent amber fragrance material Hydroxyambran, which is used in perfume production for characterizing the base note.
