Fort & Manle Charlatan Review
This is my Fort & Manle Charlatan Review, the Charlatan by Fort & Manle Fragrance Review. This is one of the most beautiful, dark rose perfumes I have ever put my smell sense on. Absolutely gorgeous, gothic, sexy, delicious, dark rose perfume. It’s got chocolate, Perigord Truffles, rose, osmanthus, vanilla and amber. Intoxicating and heavenly. One of the best. It’s what I wanted in a dark rose fragrance like Noir De Noir which also uses tuber or truffles in the notes. Man this is the best. If you like Noir de Noir you will have to get your nose on this beauty. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Charlatan by Fort & Manlé
First of all I'm not a fan of fruity, flowery, gourmand perfumes, in fact I'm a woody, earhty, leahtery perfume lover.
But this Charlatan is literally a "Charlatan"..nothing seems to be what I aspect what it would be when I read the notes...I tought not my cup of tea. Right, I spray the sample and I was knocked out...
What a subtil, complex perfume with a hughe sillage and longlivity.
For people who love the combination of chocolate, pear, rose and earhty notes, I can reccomend absolutely this Charlatan. I'm convinced and order a 50 ml.....

Pears & chocolate dressed with roses water
Yo have recived the Discovery set of this brand and i am just loving this perfume. As i had seen many reviews comoaring It with noir de noir by Tom Ford i thought It would be more in the floral side bit charlatán is for me difinetly on the gourmand side. The fragance has a very sweet and nice character... It is like a caramelized pears with chocolate dessert, dressed with some black roses water. Last weekend i went into a libanese restaurante for Lunch and i ordered one of their most typical desserts made with roses water...and this remember me a lot to this moment! I tried It thinking of Tom Ford but finalle i am thinking more of the density and comolexity of Francesca bianchi perfumes and overall with the masterpiece black by puredistance, they share lot if vives.
Maybe the biggest issue comes with the performance. For being such an intense smell the sillage is maybe a bit too soft although the longevity is alright. Just in case the quality of the perfume is bigger for me, bringing It directly yo my wishlist. I think It is an unisex scent perfect for night use with not very Hot weather.

Scent: 9.5
Longevity: 7.5
Sillage: 6
Quality/price: 5
Originality;: 9
Versatility: 7
Global: 9.5

Off you go, you charlatan!
Naming a fragrance "Charlatan" carries for me a similarly negative connotation as naming a scent "Égoïste." The bottle is among the most beautiful in the series, yet this fragrance neither dazzles nor captivates me:

I’ll start right away with the pear note. Jasmine builds up before me like the plumage of a peacock. Directly on the skin, it’s harshly on the edge of indolic, already projecting beyond that, and smells like a wet peacock. I must confess, jasmine is one of my arch-enemies in the world of fragrance. Even in doses that are tolerable for others, jasmine is usually too much for me!

The rose, which I grew fond of in the last fragrance of this series, has no chance at first here, and later it continues to suffer under the dominance of jasmine. And not only does the rose suffer, I do too. Because the combination of the bitter-chocolate vibe, which is perceptible for a while at a specific distance, together with the diminishing impression of jasmine, creates a connection that smells like freshly sprayed Ajax glass cleaner. An accord that can only be faintly detected above the skin and makes me curse this charlatan for the second time.

This middle phase is tough, unremarkable, and the base takes hours to arrive. While I think it’s great that this fragrance still manages to curve around, what I’m served in the end is something I already know. It’s the closing chord of Gypsy Water (EdP). The typical Byredo black amber accord is replaced here with incense, and it’s recreated over a nearly smoked vanilla. The finish is conciliatory, but at this stage, we’re long talking about a purely skin-close pleasure.

I’d rather reach for the much more linear original, without having to traverse my personal fragrance hell of jasmine, whose scent molecules can still be refreshed with warm breath even after 8 hours, thus being perceived in the Gypsy Water amber foundation. A tough fellow!

However, it might prove to be an alternative for those who find Black Orchid too synthetic or too opulent.

One thing I wanted to mention regarding the pricing of this series, but always forgot until now. The prices on the manufacturer's website are listed in Australian dollars. Converted, you’re looking at around the €150 range for these fragrances. The "oud horse" is a bit more expensive.

Flowers, today with a touch of chocolate
Charlatan sounds interesting for a perfume, but the question is whether this scent corresponds to the essential traits of a charlatan, which would certainly be undesirable. Some ingredients from the Fort & Manle portfolio are almost standardized here; among them is the Damask rose, which is often found at F&M.
But why not? Damask roses are known for their intense fragrance. This rose and the jasmine also mix in right from the start, with the chocolate enveloping them. Since both flowers have an intensely captivating scent, the chocolate strikes a seductive, rich note. Yes, for fans of this olfactory direction, it must be a delight. The pear fits well into the picture; its note supports both flowers and adds a subtle sweetness to the chocolate, everything very aromatic.

Sure, this can be overwhelming; one must like such pompous beginnings. It quickly becomes clear that this is not really unisex. It smells delicately floral, which surely not every man can wear. With such scents, I often think of a desert rose, often of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and his protagonist Santiago in search of his treasure and his encounter with his love, Fatima. It’s actually total nonsense, as the book takes place in Africa, while the rose here originates from Asia Minor. At least the jasmine is Moroccan jasmine. Nevertheless, Charlatan evokes such associations in me, as the scent awakens a certain feeling, a certain longing.
It doesn’t take long before the chocolate bids farewell and it only smells of the flowers. The scent becomes very weak, receding. Mentally, one checks this off, but that would be premature! Charlatan picks up again thanks to amber and vanilla. It becomes more aromatic, the scent a bit more intense, and eventually, Charlatan settles down. Whatever is being feigned here: overall, we have a quite beautiful fragrance. For men? Bold, I think, but I am also rather reserved when it comes to sweet scents for men and see Charlatan on the women’s side. Unfortunately, and this is the flaw of many Fort & Manle perfumes: the sillage fades very quickly, and the longevity is always a bit of a concern.

Deep winey roses & jasmine lie next to a plate of rich dark unsweetened chocolate, vanilla & amber truffles. Complex, earthy, gorgeous.

Bright gourmand. Green grapes with white chocolate truffles. Warm pear in vanilla sauce. Better than I expected. A distant hint of rose.

Opulent, dark-rosy, heavy, thick, smoky-sweet-caramel, warm-vanilla, chocolatey. Unfortunately, after 15 minutes it becomes too overwhelming for me.
