Attention lipstick and makeup case fragrance lovers: Curtain up for Madame Butterfly - guaranteed happy ending
I have long been searching for a dry iris scent that reminds me of theatrical makeup. Many beautiful top notes have come my way, but what followed didn't quite excite me. For example, "Incarnata" becomes too leathery for me, "Lipstick on" turns too sweet, and "Moulin Rouge" becomes too chypre-like. I find both "Lipstick Rose" and "Drole de Rose" consistently beautiful, but they develop more into creamy-rosy scents.
With Madame Butterfly, I have finally found what I have been looking for. The protagonists quickly take the stage one after the other and play a harmonious piece, with iris taking the lead role. Unlike in a real opera, there are no dramatic twists and no tragic ending, but a predictable plot and a happy ending.
The scent remains dry, iris-powdery, and thankfully never loses the makeup case note. The only change is a transformation from powdery to more creamy.
So it goes: What you see (smell) is what you get
I have also checked my association with "Infusion d’Iris" Absolue in direct comparison, resulting in my perception that the Prada iris is spicier and more powdery, while Madame Butterfly indeed smells more "makeup case-like".
Duration of the piece: about three hours, followed by gentle echoes. It is also not particularly loud, so it can be recommended to secure seats further up front.
Set design: I tested the perfume variant. This "plays" in a very noble, handcrafted Art Deco bottle, which is housed in an elaborately designed wooden box. As if that weren't enough, the box is said to also play a piece from the opera, thus containing not only fragrant but also musical notes.
This box seat variant is too expensive for an ad-hoc purchase at €380 for 60ml. As an alternative, I will buy the "cheaper parquet ticket" for an "Absolu Eau de Parfum" seat (60ml for €125) and hope that I can also see, hear, no, sniff everything well from there ;-)
