There’s a reason why we clean up everything after every party we host, even before going to bed, and especially do the dishes. The smell of stale wine when you walk into the kitchen the next morning can really ruin your appetite for a nice breakfast.

And that brings us to Sauvignonne by Ginestet. The top note exudes the haze of stale, sour white wine! There’s no fine acidity or a hint of peach in the finish, that much is certain. Thankfully, the ghost of the bad wine comes to a quick end.

What follows, however, is not really any better. An indefinable mix of citrus notes and an unmotivated woody green accord signals the abrupt end of Sauvignonne. Where has the peach gone?

In summary, the scent progression is as follows: For the first five minutes, it smells as if you’ve poured the alcohol remnants of the previous night all over yourself, and then it’s like a sucked fruit drop, flavor lemon.

Well then, cheers!

Sauvignonne - the name and the advertising promise this - is supposed to imitate the scent of wine, perhaps also sparkling wine or champagne. And it does succeed, but not well. At first, the perfume smells like sweet and poorly chilled Chateau Têtrapaque, and while you're still thinking, "Phew, hopefully this will pass," the wine scent has already dissipated. What remains is a pale fruit spritzer that can't make up its mind and therefore simply smells subtly of nothing.

Sometimes it might be better to just create a perfume instead of trying to replicate the scent of something else and then settling for the first five minutes. This one does not have the "elegance of a classic, dry white wine" and there is certainly nothing "brilliant, off-dry, sparkling" about it. It's just thin water, more suitable for crying than for wine.

Sweetly licorice. Unremarkable, but has the potential to be an everyday scent.
