Smoky Wine Oak Barrel in a Dank Cellar
Before review this fragrance, I have to admit that I have loved this bottle and concept unconditional from the first time I laid eyes on it. I am a winemaker and aficionada so this design hits all my creativity & pleasure points. Its very hard to be objective when an object is so cool looking and sounding that you don't really care if it is filled with cherry cough syrup or a fine fragrance...they had me at the gorgeous artisan wood case. Now as for the scent. This is smoky and resinous like the inside of toasted oak barrel on top with a smooth base of introspective natural vanilla bourbon (unsweetened like the unprocessed whole pod). In the background I detect hints of red fermented fruit, but again surprisingly, delightfully not sweet almost like dried Goji berries. This doesn't exactly remind me of a wine or liquer, but more of the processing equipment, barrels, the heat, leaves and dust off the incoming grapes and room with a hint of yeast and musty earth in which an artisan winemaker has made a small vintage with care from cooperage to bottling. There is a bit of an ashes of incense note mixed with dry cinnamon bark and nutmeg in the base for me, but it is very subtle and not very foody/gourmand at all- more of a campfire impression. The sillage is moderate under 1 meter (3.28 ft.), but persistent on my skin for over 12 hours. This is a masterpiece, in my opinion and is quite wearable for a spice woody dark scent in the Fall and Winter as a daily scent on a man or a striking evening scent on a woman.

Fine vanilla-scented incense, no red wine
The idea is good and humorously intended, especially for me as a passionate wine lover, the thought of testing a "wine" scent naturally appeals. However, it must be said right away that the aroma question could be somewhat peculiar.

One expects fruity aromas, perhaps a bit of cherry or blackberry, licorice, tobacco.

But what does Ginestet make of the endeavor?
Nothing at least that could actually justify a wine reference.

From the very beginning, it is accessible and pleasant to smell. I recognize a lot of incense, subtly sweet, embedded in a few vanilla pods. Quite autumnal, made to be flattering.

Red wine as a note really does not appear, instead, after about 15 minutes, a distinctly recognizable, slightly spicy-woody cedarwood tone emerges. At least the barrel is represented.

The depth is rather mediocre; after the early phase, hardly anything happens anymore, the scent remains in the aforementioned nice incense-vanilla spectrum.

Thyme and Cedar Barrel
Red wine, woods, spices - how enticing!

Shouldn't this be a scent with character? An intelligent and warm fragrance with style, with which one can sit in an armchair in their own library and read to their heart's content? A scent for an autumn evening with conversations lasting deep into the night? At least that's the romantic notion of a fragrance that promised to unite three elements that I truly love ...

On the test strip, "Le Boisé" - which translates to "The Woody" - smells very similar to "Le Vetiver - Itasca" to me, although less complex. I can't detect the wine note, nor any vanilla or other spices. At best, I get a faint memory of freshly pulled wine corks from the bottle neck, but fundamentally, cedar wood is clearly in the spotlight. (Aren't wine barrels made of oak?) I was somewhat disappointed accordingly.

The skin test then gave me hope again: Thyme! Not the dried stuff, but fresh, juicy herb. Plenty of it for about half an hour. And then? Cedar wood. It doesn't smell bad, it's fresh and pleasant, but far from what Ginestet promises.

The scent doesn't suit me and it doesn't fit me. What a shame. However, since the longevity also leaves something to be desired, it won't be too bad today ...
