Braked!

The perfume lovers and -enthusiasts who know me from before are aware of how I always crowed about the topic of Chypre. “Here, mine, mine, want to test, want to have....”

My love for Chypres was probably ingrained in me from birth, and my collection has always been dominated by Chypres at around 70%. Well, everyone lives their own madness as best they can.

As I already wrote in my blog about Chypre, Chypres are the largest group in perfume genealogy.
Chypres were quite out of fashion from the late 1990s until the end of the 2000s. While some houses still released Chypres, floral scents and sugary sweet candy-like fragrances dominated at that time, which could pull your fillings out.
It was quite questionable when a very austere woman, 50 ++, with a brush haircut, eyebrows like Theo Waigel, and Birkenstock sandals suddenly smelled like Toffifee.

About 10 -12 years ago, many perfume houses revisited the topic of Chypre or remembered that they had it in their lineup. Well, some were unfortunately made worse.

Golden Chypre is described as Chypre-like, which is quite true, as I do not perceive it as a classic Chypre.
The opening is spicy, and the lemon box was probably way at the back of the market.
In the heart, it becomes somewhat greenish, and if you’ve ever had geraniums in balcony boxes, you know that the leaves smell slightly bitter when you clean them.
The grave-like patchouli is used very subtly, and the mossy note is completely missing in the drydown. It is restrainedly woody, and the musk doesn’t save it either.

All in all, a nice scent. Very close to the skin. I simply miss the radiance and a bit of punch from classic Chypres here.
I have removed Golden Chypre from my wishlist. That way, I don’t have to eat instant soups for weeks to save up for it.

"Golden Chypre" is the most puzzling fragrance I've encountered from the house of Grossmith so far. While all the predecessors I tested went in a warm and "oriental" direction, this quirky representative stands out due to a certain awkwardness in classification. It's actually good, but at times also annoying ;-)

According to the "textbook," Chypre classifies a family of perfumes that consist of a hesperidic top note of citrus oils like bergamot, orange, lemon, or neroli, a floral heart note of rose and jasmine oil, and a warm, woody-mossy base note of oakmoss and musk. The woody aspects of a Chypre composition are often accentuated by characteristic secondary notes, usually patchouli oil, but often also vetiver or sandalwood. At least that's what Wikipedia says.

However, what I smell deviates quite a bit from this definition.

The top note is already unusual: citrus freshness and nutmeg create an exciting and energetic duo that I haven't encountered in this form before.

The flowers from the heart note don't really want to show themselves. I mainly perceive patchouli (slightly earthy, but not musty) and a hint of light rose. It's all not overwhelming, but very pleasant. Pleasantly restrained.

With the transition to the base, "Golden Chypre" gains warmth (amber, musk, light woods) on one hand, but also green aspects (dark woods, vetiver) on the other.

Maybe my nose is deceiving me, but this fragrance that is spreading out gives me the feeling of walking barefoot over a very dense, extremely soft, and wonderfully fragrant moss carpet. The sun seems to shine through the trees onto the moss-covered clearing. That's exactly how I perceive "Golden Chypre." A golden (meaning bright and friendly) and at the same time green fragrance that avoids any harshness.

It sounds simple, comes across as natural and relaxed. A daytime fragrance for all occasions that is certainly never, anywhere, and for any reason too much. Yet it is of high quality and features well-blended scent components.

Certainly not a "pure Chypre," but a successful all-rounder or a gentle introduction to the green fragrance world. However, "Golden Chypre" will not be joining my collection, as I am simply not the Chypre type (or as a highly esteemed friend of mine likes to say, "Schüppre").

More green-citrusy with a slight floral touch than Chypre. It’s so bland and carelessly arranged that it leaves me completely cold.

Starts spicy fresh, then there are blossoms with a good dose of patch, and it ends like Mitsouko, just without the moss and less sensual. Mitsouko is...

I love the three amazing scents from Grossmith - this fragrance is so out of the ordinary - my first impression was: Pitralon. Cheap.

I've had many strong chypres before. This one is quite gentle but still lasts well. I especially like the citrus note. It's wearable anytime.
